Red face losing my hair

I have been told to expect around 3 months post op my hair will probably start to fall out. I expected a little here and there but not like this. It is falling out by the hand full. How long does this last? I don't have thick hair to begin with and if this continues for a long time I will be bald headed. Is there anything I can do? Please help.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

It usually starts around the 50 pound lost range and can continue for a while....there is nothing you can do to stop it....you might want to increase your protein intake (you body is starving for protein and robbing your hair as a result)....A lot of us took biotin too...it doesn't stop it, but it will help to promote new hair growth.....it's not fatal, and you won't go bald.....some lose more than others....

You are not getting enough protein. The body needs protein to perform many functions. One of them is hair and nail growth.

More protein may help and the biotin helps with regrowth...but it pretty much happens anyway. Most of us had it happen - I think Shannon was one of the ones who said 'by the handful'. Mine wasn't that bad, but it was alot - hair all over the place, in my shirt, in clothes coming out of the dryer, on the floor, in the shower. My hair was very long, so seeing it all over the place was upsetting. But!! You won't go bald, and it does grow back (some even say thicker!). Most of us have tried to wait it out , but you'll notice we all have short hair now. Try not to worry, and think of it this way, new life, new body...new sassy hair cut! Ok, now you can throw something at me . Hugs!

Cute post Denise!

About the hair loss, it is going to happen, but you won't go bald. I promise you will make it through it. Try not to panic.

Don't feel bad, I freaked out at the amount of hair loss I experienced also. My doctor's nutritionist told me to try biotin and of course to keep my protein levels high. I started on the biotin, I take 7500 mcg a day. It helped, but I was still experiencing more hair loss than I liked. I have a real problem getting enough protein thru the food I eat and tend to slack off on my protein shakes etc. I found a product made by TWINLAB called Hydrolyzed Collagen Protein. 2 tablespoons give you 15 grams of protein and 100% of DV for B-Complex vitamins. I started taking this at least 2 times per day along with the biotin (and of course the multi-vites and calcium recommended by the doc) and not only has my hair loss stopped, but I'm feeling much better in general. Mind you, the protein from TWINLAB is not the most pleasant tasting substance in the world, but I found that the gain outweighs the taste. good luck!

I have really been working on getting the protein in everyday. Where do I find biotin? Is it liquid or pills? Going to look into the Twinlab. Where do I find that Twinlab product at? Thanks everyone.

I know how you feel. I started losing hair at about 3-4 months out and now at 7 1/2 months I'm still losing it. I used to have veryyyy thick hair, not anymore. I just cut my hair very short so it's not as noticeable. I started using nioxin and upping my protein. It doesn't seem to be as bad but to a women it's always a bad day when your hair falls out. Good luck

Unhappy I know this is scary!

ALICE~
I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I remember hearing all about the hair loss before I had my surgery -- and got really worried about it.
I heard thru many "PostOps" (before my surgery) that hair loss generally happens during this time or that...so I was expecting hair loss about 3-4 mos. after my surgery...and around losing a certain amount.
Anyway...I remember hitting 5mos...and I had lost nearly 90#'s and still had not seen much hair loss...I thought I was 'free & clear' -- and then around 6mos. and a loss of about 100#'s it all started.
It was a very scary and very emotional roller coaster! I wasn't loosing it by the handfuls...but every day I'd collect from the brush, comb, tub to see how much was falling out - and was FREAKING OUT! (not to mention I was a bit obsessed! lol! Here is one of my post---> Losing HAIR: "And so it begins..." (pictures - kinda gross...) )

Anyway...all of this to say, it is normal. A very high percentage of us PostOps lose our hair - but each condition is unique...some more, some less, some here, some there - but everyone above is right once your hair is coming out there is only a few things you can do:
  • BIOTIN: to promote new hair growth (pill/supplement - GNC or someplace like it...)
  • NEXUS or OJON (or another 'like' product): to promote thickening & growth. (shampoo/gel/conditioner - beauty supply)
  • PROTEIN - PROTEIN - PROTEIN: to supplement your diet.
Something I heard from my doctor/nutritionist that I'll never forget is --
Whatever you do NOW...will effect your hair 3mos. from now....so, even if you begin to do all your supplements and protein now -- you most likely will not see any progress for approx. 12 weeks.
AND...whatever you did 3 mos. ago will be how your body (hair) is reacting now.
So...for me, at first I was obsessed with doing everything perfect -- I was getting in ALL my protein each day (60 - 75ozs)...ALL my supplements...and all my water (64oz) each day.
But, as I got more comfortable - I started being lax with my diet...lax with taking my supplements (I was in the process of moving to NYC with my family - so I was stressed on top of that!)....and THEN -- like clock work to the 3mos....I started loosing my hair! WOW!!

THEN...at that time I began taking it all VERY seriously...and got all my protein in...all my vitamins...and all my water again...and once again -- like clock work...my hair stopped falling out (as much) and I began to see regrowth.
At the time of my hair loss...I started taking biotin also...as well as doing Ojon...which thicken what I had...and made me feel better!

Hope this helps you...and is some encouragement.
CONGRATS on your successes...it's sooo exciting isn't it??
