Default Chronic Diarrhea after Surgery

I am 3 1/2 weeks after the surgery and still have chronic diarrhea. I had an allergic reaction to soy in some of the shakes but am wondering if maybe I am not tolerating the whey protein. I have tried Lactaid before drinking a shake but it has not made any difference. My doctor just kind of shrugged his shoulders and said it from the antibiotics during surgery and it will fix itself. (?) Any suggestions will be appreciated!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I would try eliminating the dairy first, seems like the anitbiotics should be clear of your system now. Keep hydrated! I'm sorry you are going through this...most of us have the opposite problem..LOL!

If I eliminate the dairy and cannot do soy, what kind of protein drinks are left? It is a hard battle every day to get the protein but I do from the whey and some food. I don't think I can eat enough of food to get the 60 grams. Any suggestions? I have little cans of tuna and chicken but that is a lot to eat.

How about egg whites? I don't have much else to offer. Hope someone else jumps in with an idea for you.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Losers' Bench.
(((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

Could it be that you have C.difficil? If so, it often does take time for the antibiotics to take care of it.
Be sure to keep hydrated first, and take things one day at a time.

Call your doc back and ask him to test for C Diff. I had that after surgery and needed to be put on Flagyl to cure it. C Diff can be serious if left untreated. A week on Flagyl and I was okay. Now because of the iron I have the other problem. But I would rather it, being afraid to cough or sneeze because of the "outcome".

C Diff is a caused by using anti-biotics. I think it has to do with killing off the good bacteria. (Doc can explain it better) Usually the diarrhea is high in acid and can be a little burning. But usually when you have the runs everything is sore and I thought it was just raw. My doctor didn't think that was my problem since the dose of anti-biotics was low, but ordered the test anyway. Low and behold it was C Diff.

A friend of mine freaked out when I told her because her grandmother died from C Diff in a nursing home. They left it untreated. Of course she was in her 90's. My girlfriends three year old had lukemia and was in the hospital for almost a year. Twice he developed C Diff so bad that when you would clean him up after an accident the blisters on his little bottom would break open. So if left untreated, it is not good news.

I think it is more serious for the young and the old, but I do know it sure isn't something I would want to go on forever.

I had my gastric bypass 5 years ago and have had chronic diarrhea since. My gastro doctor has given me Prevalite and it works. The days I forget to take this medicine I have very bad diarrhea. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it so not to have to take this medicine every day?
