Unhappy Help me...I'm puking and I can't stop!

I'm one month post-surgery and at my last visit (last week), my doc approved me to move onto solids. Problem is, I'm pretty much puking about 75% of the time after I eat. I'm eating mostly softer solids, I take it slow, chew a gazillion times before swallowing, and make sure it's no more than 1/2 cup, but it still frequently comes back up.

At times, I have had sips of liquid with these meals (I know, a no-no), but I feel like I have to to get the food to go down, otherwise it hurts a bit. Unfortunately, this seems to make it worse and almost always results in vomiting.

Does this get better or change with time? Is it still just a matter of finding out what foods I can now eat post-op, as some things go down fine? Does the temperature of the food and/or liquids have anything to do with it?

Any thoughts or recommendations are more than welcome - thanks in advance!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

CALL YOUR SURGEON ASAP.
You may very well have what is known as a stricture, your stoma (the opening of the pouch to the intestines) has shrunk with the healing, and is too small to pass the more solid foods. You need to be checked out for this first, before going on to anything further.

Thanks for the quick response, Doc! I've called and made an appointment for tomorrow morning. I assumed the vomiting was normal, but the fact that it hurts almost 90% of the time I eat concerns me. I'll post his response tomorrow.

I agree with doc.

Also, I would not drink at all with meals, everytime I did its so much pain. I think the fluid mixes with the food and can swell or something, I just no its off limits more more than flushing food out, it HURTS! Keep any fluids away until at least 30 min-1hr, whatever you were instructed.

I agree with Doc. Definitely call your surgeon as soon as possible. This is definitely not normal if you're doing what you are suppose to be. Good luck and keep us posted.

Oh that is no fun. Sorry you are feeling yucky. If not a stricture I would suggest that you eat much slower. that was always my problem. Set a timer for 2 minutes and take one bite every 2 min. Hang in there it will get better.

I had the same problem. Mine wasn't a stricture. It took me over 3 months to be able to eat solid food without throwing up. I had to be on soft foods much longer than normal. I am happy to say that everything is fine now, I can eat chicken and other protein without a problem! Hopefully that will be the same for you.
