I have a set down Job. Basically how long do you think I will need to take off work after Gastric bypass surgery? Id like to hear more about the recovery time and the pain and other issues I'll be facing after the surgery.

Tess - I have a desk job too. I went back to work after 2 weeks and was tired but did fine. Check out some of the old threads for people's input on recovery times. There are lots of different stories!

I was fine after about 1 week. I just need a nap. I need naps or early bedtime for about 1 month.

Hi Tess, my surgery is Feb. 4th & Ive been wondering the same thing. I have a desk job & Ive heard lots of different thing's..some people are ok with 2wks, some need 3 or 4. Im also getting laid off & have 2 interviews this week, in other departments at work....which is crazy! Im going to obviously have to tell them about my surgery & that I may be off for approx 3 wks. Hopefully they will wait for me. Im finding it really hard to concentrate on my surgery right now, with the possibility of a new job, but at the same time, I dont know when the lay-off will be, & I don't want to miss out on these 2 jobs..who knows when the next opening will come up. So I have to take advantage of the fact that the company has other openings & just go for it. Like so many people who are loosing their jobs & with the economy the way it is right now, im sure some of you can relate. Im having surgery on a Wednesday-(Feb.4th), so im hoping I can go back to work on Feb 16th...which is only 12 days..but its a desk job, so hopefully it should go fine. I hope you can take the time off that you need & not have to worry about your job! We all need this time off to heal & think about ourselves for a change! Good luck Tess!

My doc said 4 weeks for recovery, so I took the 4 weeks of sick leae. I am in week 2 and going crazy at home!!!! If everything goes well with your surgery, I would say 2 weeks should be ok, but keep in mind that you will probably feel a bit more tired than usual at work. Regards,

I went back to school 2 days post op. I do not recommend that though. I would say 1 week at the least. I have issues with feeling tired too.

I don't work but was up chasing my 2 toddlers.. does that count?? LOL I was just going to comment on the fact that some have some pain afterwards and some don't. I know Kara mentioned she was in pain.. but I didn't have any pain at all after the initial surgery. My surgery site itself never ever gave me pain.. it was the pain in my shoulders from the gas and by the time I left the hospital, that was pretty much gone. I felt great after my surgery, just really tired.
I know you're worried about your job.. I'd ask for the maximum time you feel comfortable with and if you feel good before then, then go back early.
