I met with my Sergion this week for the first time and based in my current weight he said I could expect to loose down to about 180. I would like to go closer to 150. I wanted to know if its really hard to loose after the window closes? I know I will always have to eat healthy and exercise, but is there an exact moment when "thats as good as your going to get" ?

The other question is one I think I have an answer for but I would like some comments.....
If I can manage to loose 25 pounds before, would my estamated number after be 25 less. kind of a silly question maybe, but what do you think?

Thanks

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The doc has his statistical tables he uses to figure out your "goal". Your body doesn't do statistics very well, and has its own ideas of what your "goal" should be. In a case like this, the body wins! If you follow the rules and don't get creative with them, your body will take you to where it wants to be.

Example: the surgeon told me that my "goal" was 184 based on the tables. Seven months later, I reached my present weight and I've been here (+/- 2 pounds) for the last seven months. No way would I have thought I'd ever see the 160's. I may have passed through here on the way up (probably did, now that I think about it ) but I have no memory of ever being this weight. If I have the "bounce" that many have described, I'll get back up to the high 170s or so. Compared to 280, I can live with that.

There will come a time when it becomes harder to make more gains in losing. Usually in the year+ range somewhere. So make the best of it while you're in the early days and there's no telling what your body has in store for you. Only way you'll get there, though, is if you are rigorous in your obedience to the rules your doc gives you. Don't try to get creative or take short-cuts. There aren't any. Follow the rules, and watch what happens!

As always, your mileage may vary. Nothing is impossible though if you're willing to work for it! Good luck!

hmm. well my dr said i would land at 180. um....i blew past it. my lowest was 138. im actually trying to regain some since i hit that low this past june. i would keep in mind what your doc says but your body will stop when its ready.

if you lose weight pre-op there is less to figure into the percentage of excess...i dunno if that makes sense. put it this way, if youlose 25 pre-op it is no longer part of the equasion

as for still being able to lose...for me (and we are all different) there have been weeks where i stuck to the rules just to see what would happen and i dumped 6 lbs. im still within the 24 months by a hair. LOL! it will never be as rapid as the first 6 months or so. keep that in mind. but from what i understand if you 'stray' and then follow the pouch rules you will lose better than diet and exercise pre-op. the key is to stick to the rules for life. you shouldnt ever have to "try" to lose so to speak...

and then of course there is the dreaded 10% of loss bounce back. supposedly you will regain 10% of what you lose. still waiting for my bounce i guess...

all of this will be relative to your own body. there really is no set answer. i wish there was. it would have eased my control issues early on. lol.

Thanks Perfesser and Kenya.

Kenya- so when you say a whole new equasion by that you mean its just another guess and my body will still stop when it wants to ? It diffenitly wouldnt cause me not to drop after though? I have heard the more you have to loose the easier it comes off for a while after. Loseing some now wouldnt make it any harder rite?

I am on my 6 month suppervised diet and would like to make the most of it. KWIM?

I think if the more you lose pre-op the lower you are going to get afterward.

My doc told me I'd get to 170 !!!! That was 42 pounds ago. I have been totally amazed that I could lose this much. In my wildest dreams I never thought I would go below 145.

I charted my weight loss and it was a really steep slope for the first 6 months, then it changed by about half for the next 6, and now it's really shallow. So yes, do your best to lose it in that first year. I guess you can still lose it after the first year if you are trying hard, but I've been trying to put the brakes on.

the more you lose now the 'slower' the loss will be post-op because you have LESS to lose. someone who is say 5'2" with 100 lbs to lose with lose faster than someone the same height with 75 to lose. the more you have to lose the faster you lose it.

not so much a measure of how difficult it will be but the pace. the heavier you are the faster you lose post op. hope this clarified vs confusing you futher. sometimes i do that to ppl

i think you should lose if you can pre-op. it will make the surgery itself easier on your body and you will be healthier. either way you will lose faster than had you not had the surgery at all.

i am sure doc could explain this WAY BETTER lol.

In either case, the body will settle in the same place when it decides it's time. Your body's goal will not be affected by losing a few or a lot pre-op. The big difference is how much room you give the surgeon to work his magic in you! The more you lose, the easier it is for him/her. And it does good things for you, too!

I think many of us were surprised by how well the plan works when you work it I never dreamed I'd be in the 140's, that's actually below my "I'll be ecstatic if I lose to" number which was 150! My surg told me to plan on losing about 100#. which I did somewhere last spring. Still wondering if I'll bounce~~~

The surgeons will usually give you a conservative number based on BMI and their own experiences, but from what I've seen here, those who stick to the rules and don't improvise land in the normal weight range BMI-wise fairly easily. Some surgeons won't even give goal numbers, they just say, stick to the ruled I give you, and let your body do the rest.
It's the maintenance part that's hard to figure out, actually, but even here, if you regain, it's usually because you are getting complacent and throwing out some of the rules, so, since you still have your tool, if you go back to the basics and stick to that, you will lose again, though it definitely will be much slower than your immediate post op days.
