Default Water is the issue...

Since my surgery on January 20, 2009, I have had pain/discomfort when drinking water. If I drink more than a tiny sip, especially the first one, I feel the pouch pain, then what feels like heartburn coming up, then I start salivating and feeling vaguely nauseous. I don't seem to have the same problem with most other liquids, although I still have to be careful with any thin liquids. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had, or is having, a similar response to any liquid. My doc doesn't have an answer for me, and I'm really struggling to get in my fluids because of this.

Help!?!!???!

Maggie

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

It could be the temp of the water. I cannot do cold water, if I do I start cramping up instantly. I never liked room temp water before but now I love it. How long do you wat to start drinking after you eat? Maybe wait a few more minutes and see what happens. Hate those foamies! Hang in there and keep at it. Gotta get that water in.

Do you try flavoring your water? I still can't handle plain water since my surgery, but if I mix in a little Crystal Light or flavoring and drink it room temp, no problem! Give it a try and also try warm, very cold and room temp.

I am with gidget, I can't take plain water, only flavored bottled waters or regular water with a dash of lemon; otherwise, gatorade or diet juices.

I have to have my water ice cold!! I even go as far as putting water bottles in the freezer until they are half frozen. I can't handle water if it is not really cold. You may want to try the different temps and see if that helps. If you can drink it, Crystal Lite might be a solution. Prior to surgery I could not get enough. Now, I can't tolerate it at all. Just depends on you. Keep trying different things, but make sure you get it all in.

I have seen post simular to this one before. I take water any temp I can get it. I do know when i first had this done my water needed to be like room temp. I even drink milk warm now that i used to have to have ice cold. Its easier on my tummy. You know water is the besst for you however there has been alot on nowdays that water even in your own food counts as your water daily. You will have to mess around with this until you find somthing you tolerate. Then try the straight water again and see how you do.

Just like milk with me. I couldnt tolerate it at one time but i eventually worked with it enough so I can have it now. Its such a important think to have.

It sounds like I'm not the only one with a variation of this problem. I am able to tolerate my water with Crystal Light in it, but I'm trying to stay away from nutrasweet for several reasons. I've tried water at every temperature with similar results, although hot herbal teas seem to be better than anything. I guess this is just one of those wierd things I'll have to get used to.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I've learned a lot from the wonderful people here!

Many Blessings,
Maggie

Fairly early out, almost everyone seems to have issues with plain water. Sometimes, temp solves the problem, but sometimes not.
Part of it probably has to do with the *density* of water or liquids, as that affects how easily, or how not so easily, absorbed something is. This is what Denise is talking about.
Put the two together, and I am thinking that since your pouch will still be swollen and healing and adjusting early out, liquids with *density* higher than water is absorbed more easily, and sits well in your pouch. The further out you are, your pouch will have readjusted, and you will be able to tolerate a wider range of food and liquids than immediately post op, or a couple of months within.
So, give it time. Even if it doesn't sit well in your pouch right now, give it a try later on...and later on again. For now, get your fluids in with what sits well in your pouch--but not from pops and sodas, mind you

Thanks, Doc! That is an answer even my surgeon wasn't able to give me.
In the end, I guess I'll just have to honor what my body is telling me, even if I don't understand it at that time.

You are awesome!
