| Stomach Pain
As many of you know.. my recovery was a breeze.. couldn't have asked for a more easy time after surgery. I never had pain except for the pain in my shoulders immediately after surgery. Never had any foods bother me or give me pain other than not chewing my chicken enough once and it getting stuck for awhile. Well, back in mid Feb. I was given the go ahead to eat whatever I wanted as long as I followed the rules. Well, yesterday I went to Applebees with the kids and got the 2 for 5.99. I chose tomato and basil soup and a grilled chicken side salad. It was only the second time I've eaten salad since my surgery. I guess I was afraid of what the lettuce would do. I'm 3 1/2 months out. I had strictly Romain lettuce before as a salad I made here at home for dinner one night. Yesterday's salad had a mixture of greens along with the grilled chicken. I think it had some romain, some ice burg, maybe some type of sprout or something. Ever since then, my stomach has hurt. Not a nauseas type of hurt, but a pain type of hurt. It was ok during the night if I laid on my side, but if I turned over or laid on my back, my stomach hurt. This morning I was reading to Joshua as he sat on my lap and he inadvertently put his elbow into my stomach and it was like I'd just had surgery all over again. If I'm sitting still, it doesn't bother me like right now.
I was just thinking it had to be the salad because I haven't eaten anything else that's been different. Has this happened to anyone else with salad?
I decided I was just going to do liquids and protein drinks today to calm it down and let things pass before I try foods again.
What do you think??

hmmmmmmm it could be the salad Martha. I know when I eat salad I get very bloated and get very gassy too. I know I know TMI but salad just doesnt agree with me 100% even though it tates so darn good.
Hope your stomach settles down.

Lettuce can be a tough thing to digest. Does the pain seem to be moving or is it staying in the pouch? Gas pains can be really sharp and take as long as a day to go away. THey seem to move along the intestines and will eventually pass, though they can be hard to pinpoint the exact location. If the pain stays in the pouch I would be a little worried - maybe something stuck? Keep us posted.

I sure hope you feel better soon. I don't know about salad. I have eaten it a few times. Sometimes it hurts me sometimes it does fine. The only thing that hurts me is cooked greens. I don't get that... lol My pouch just does not like them at all. If this does not get better please call your dr. It could be something else going on. If something does not agree with me it doesnt last long and it is better. Please keep us posted. >>>dixie<<<<

Martha, I think it's probably the salad. Some people have a problem digesting it. I hope you get to feeling better soon, and please keep us posted.

I LOVE salad of all kinds, romaine, spinach, iceberg mix etc...
BUT since surgery I have to say that I haven't had it but maybe 4-5 times... no problwms with it, just don't want to waste my pouchy space on it~~~
When I do get a salad, I eat the cheese, chicken & egg with VERY little greens.
If the pain continues today you should call the DOC.
Hope your feeling better soon....
LOL,

Martha I had surgery a couple of weeks before you and I still can't eat salad. I have tried it a couple of times since surgery and everytime I felt really bad afterwards. But not to the point that I was in pain just a general not good feeling. If it was the salad then the pain should surely be gone a least by late evening tonight. If you don't feel better by tomorrow morning then I think you should call your doctor. Keep us posted.

ummmm...okay don't slam me for saying the obvious but WHY would you eat salad? what nutrition are you gonna get from it? NONE...
PROTEIN is supposed to be the focus for all the rest of your life, first, most and for some of us ONLY...at 7 yrs out the nutrionist says I need to do solid protein only for the most part and pretty much nothing else..this based on my labs and this issue of the overlarge stoma.

A lot of people can't do salad until well past 6 months. Be careful with anything raw, even if it's meant to be eaten raw. Also, as BreeChich says, veggies can take up the space you want to save for protein, so if there's something else that you must eat, eat that first.
Hope you will feel better aftera good rest.
