I'm two months out, I get all my protein in, need to know if there is a caloric amount I should stay around? I'm down 43 lbs, lots of inches. I still feel like I'm eating too much? I use fitday.com to journal everyday.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Just stick to your surgeon's rules. Your pouch won't allow you to eat much, though your head will tell you otherwise.
If you are sticking to your surgeon's rules, then, your intake probably will land somewhere around 600-800 at where you are. Eventually, that should increase to around 1000 per day as your first Surgiversary approaches. Maintenance probably will land you at around 1200-1400, but it will differ with the individual, so, even if your count is off, so long as you are doing what your surgeon and nut says, don't worry.

Default Carb count?

I have been logging what I eat daily on dailyplate.com and I was taken aback today to see 63 grams of carbohydrates in my intake! Most came from the two servings of milk I had today in my protein shakes (fat free milk) does the source make these OK carbs or is that too much?

Nutritionally speaking, 63g is fine, especially since they are from natural sources, not processed food. Actually, as far as nutrition and medicine goes, you are recommended to ge in at least 100g carbs, preferably at least 120g carbs, as our brain cells can only use glucose as energy source. Many WLSers however, have a problem with carbs, and are admitted carbaholics, so they do try to keep the carb level as low as they can, some as low as under 30g, which can be too low, though.

Sorry to step on your post!!! Doc, is it possible that ANY carb intake can slow down your weight loss or am I just freaking out again for no apparent reason!!! I know, I know....everyone loses differently...but I am sick and tired of feeling like I am not doing what I am suppose to. I know it is physically impossible to gain weight on the amount I eat. But why do I go up in weight more than down...Is it just water weight? Am I not drinking enough? I am ready to pull my hair out!!!!

You NEED carbs to maintain life. If you reduce the amount of carbs below the very minimum amount that you need, your body is going to hang on to every itty bitty thing. If you are stalling and you reduce your intake, then your body is going to go into starvation mode and refuse to release anything because it isn't getting the minimum amount your body needs to maintain its functions and life itself. In other words, you need to INCREASE your intake and let your body know that it will receive the nutrients it needs, so it will release the extras stored in your body.

The minimum amount you need also acts as the fuel and lubricant to metabolise the extras that you need to shed smoothly. In other words, you need some *lubricants* for your engine to run smoothly. Lack the *lubricants* and your engine is going to stall.

If you are exercising as you should, then some of the weight you stall/gain will be from muscles--muscles weigh more per volume than fat, and with this case, your clothes sizes and inches will fly away, while the lbs stay. This is quite normal, and unless this takes place, you will not get the best out of your weight loss journey.

If you aren't exercising, then you are not giving your body the chance to build a strong body, and use more calories to help along the weight loss and help you maintain once you have arrived at goal.

You are nowhere near what you were getting in pre op when you were topping the scale. Right at this moment, you are nowhere near having the ability to get in enough to gain weight, or maintain your present weight. Your body has no choice but to lose, but you have to give it some gentle nudges by increasing your intake, getting your protein in, getting in the minimum amount of good fat, and the minimum amount of good carbs, for the engine to run smoothly.

The topic of carb free and fat free post op lifestyles are discussed at my support groups. You do need some fats in your diet to helpt maintain healthy skin, etc. You also need healthy carbs daily too. Without carbs, you'll probably have a brain fog, with unclear thinking. Eat high protien foods, some veggies, and less starches. If you don't get enough fat in foods, add some olive oils to salads, mayonnaise, etc to your diet for fats. Good luck. DAVE

i eat somewhere around 800 calories and 30 NET carbs per day. i don't count fat grams, but am conscious of how my foods are prepared, use a lot of olive oil in my cooking. eat good healthy carbs in vegetables and berries. i have completely stayed away from pastas, breads, potatoes.
