| Head-Hunger
Okay so I just had my surgery on June 15th and I have been following my surgeons instructions to a T. I am having a lot of head-hunger tho. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might combat that? All the commercials I see on tv and just want to eat it all! I am in the "soft-solids" stage and next week I will convert to high-proteins (cheese, beans, lunch meats) maybe this will get better once I can do that? I don't know...
Any suggestions? Is this normal for beginners?

Head hunger was the worse. I totally watched just movies without food commericals and banned fast food from the house for awhile. You adjust eventually and crave good stuff!

Welcome to the mind game!! If exposure to food commercials is causing a problem, find entertainment that doesn't have them. (Like my doctor told me many years ago, "if it hurts to do this, don't do this!") Things get better once you can eat real food again, but the temptations are always there. How well you killed your cravings and changed your dysfunctional relationship with food will determine how much of a distraction the head hunger/craving issues will be.
It's pretty normal. If handled right, it gets ever so much better in the near future. If you have buried vulnerabilities, you may be in for a challenging ride. Some folks find that professional help from a person qualified to work with eating disorders is a great help. Something to keep in the back of your mind if it's ever needed. If it threatens to overwhelm you, you aren't alone, and there is help available, so don't try to gut it out needlessly.
Too early to get too concerned over it right now. What you are experiencing is fairly typical.
Good luck!! Be strong!!

Oh yes, the head hunger was so strong at first. I would concentrate on how my new pouch felt and realize that I wasn't feeling hunger at all and would tell myself that it was all in my head. But it still drove me crazy. I threw out all kinds of "food", all the bad stuff that was tempting me. Told DH he would just have to live without the stuff for now.
I had baked a loaf of banana nut bread and was craving it something awful. I finally pinched off a tiny crumb, smaller than a pencil eraser and put it on my tongue and let it dissolve and then spit it out because i was afraid that it might have a tiny bit of walnut that could hurt my pouch. That seemed to stop the craving and after that I was able to ignore the head hunger pangs.
Rent movies and watch them, or TVO if you have that so you can fast forward thru the comercials. Good Luck. This will pass soon and you'll be on your way to losing!

| aweee - that is the pits!!!!
i did a voluntary 2 week pre-op protein liquids and remember being bugged with head hunger during that period of time. i'm glad that i did it pre-op because after surgery i didn't have any problems at all. i do recall during those 2 weeks drinking beef bouillon or chicken broth and that helped quite a lot.
hopefully this will ease up once you are able to eat a few different things hang in there - it will all pass and you will be SKINNY!!!

| The proteins will help alot.
I'm only 3 weeks out, so I'm right there with ya. My first week on "clear fluids" was hell. The second week on soft foods - things were soooo much better! I was living on eggs, yogurt and cottage cheese mostly, and felt like at least there was something I could put in my mouth to chew! Week three I started proteins, fruits and veggies. No grains yet at all, but beans are definitely on the list now. I'm MUCH less focused on the food now. I can even watch TV without losing my mind, thankfully, and am again able to prepare food for my kids without totally losing my mind. That was the hardest, feeding my family when I couldn't eat at all! Oye!
So, hang in there, once you start the proteins, you can actually HAVE some of what everyone else is eating. I even went to a Father's Day BBQ and had teeny, tiny portions of BBQ chicken and tri-tip, one bite of baked potato, and a little bit of watermelon. I felt like I was eating a REAL meal!
Those crazy carb cravings are really powerful, but they do subside. I believe they are almost like an addict's cravings, 'cause lets face it, we are all carb addicts to start with. I don't know that they will ever go away completely, but, hopefully will continue to be manageable. Hang in there.
Jody

Jody | once you get the carbs out of ur system and keep them to a daily minimum of HEALTHY carbs you won't feel the temptation/addition

The big difference between a drug, alcohol, sex, gambling, etc. addiction and a food addiction is that once you're clean, you can live totally without ever touching the object of your addiction. Food addicts can live totally without food, but not for long! We have to live in constant contact with some form of our former drug. That's why it is soooo important to KILL that carb monster once and for all!!! Only then can you eat happily ever after ...

Removing excess reminders of food at your stage probably is the best.
Also, get in as much fluids as you can, sometimes, you actually may be thirsty, not hungry. Going out for a walk can also help, too.
Everyone's been there, done that, and came through with flying colors, to hang in there, this won't last forever, even if it seems like that right now.

I am still on clear liquids today. I will attempt to start full liquids tomorrow. Even though I am into my second week post op I can not count the first week because I was vomiting so much. Last night my family wanted fried chicken. UGH! It smelled good at first then the smell started making me sick. Once they were settled I definitely didn't want any. I kept thinking clogged arteries. Pounds and pounds.
