Okay first of all, I am SO sorry for the personal question. But I'm having some real issues with this and it's starting to concern me. Pre-surgery I had no problems. Post-op it's now been nine days. I am trying to drink and nothing. I am now doing the Colace stuff. This is absolutely horrible and I just don't know what else to do.

Anyone else care to share? Is this really common? Is this going to be a permenent problem being post-op?

Again, I am sorry for the question, but I need a little feedback here.

Jen

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had a problem the first week or so and my doctor had me take a stool softener. Your digestion system has to learn to work all over again because it has been cut into and changed from what it was before surgery. Also the anesthesia can cause constipation also. Try walking the best you can and ask your doctor about a stool softener. I was told to take Dulcolax. It went away after a couple of weeks and now I am fine without no help.

I also had that problem. My doctor told me to use Miralax and it works great. I take it a couple times a week. You can put it in coffee or any liquid and it does not taste at all. Hope you get this resolved soon. I know it makes you feel bad.

I have been chronically constipated my entire life. I was laxative dependant in my youth years (21 to 24 or so).

You may need something like Ducolax to get things moving immediately (2 days) THEN take the colace daily. Of course verify that with your PCP and/or surgeon. Up your fiber with Benefiber or similar, also daily.

I definitley had that problem, but also remember you've had MAJOR surgery, your body hasn't caught up yet, and you're eating totally different than you did before surgery. Also remember, you're probably getting more protein now than before surgery, and that definitely makes a difference. Stool softners helped me, but of course check with your PCP and/or bariatric doc before taking them. Make sure you walk; that will definitely help. Also remember, you will not go as much now as you did before surgery. This is a total body change. Welcome to your new world, which will be forever changing.

Every post op will initially have this issue. Many have a re occurring issue too. You'll have to find the "recipe" that works best for you. It's a balance of hydration and fiber for most post op. Personally, I rely on herbal laxative capsules, high fiber diet, plenty of water, MOVEMENT (like exercising), and a herbal tea. The herbal tea can also be mixed as a detoxifier, which helps even more with this issue. The herbal tea is made by the company that makes the Epic Ultra liquid vitamins I use. I boil 1/2 gallon of water. Turn off the stovetop burner. I then add 2 of the herbal tea bags, cover, and let steep for 8 hours. I then place in a covered pitcher. On hot days, I have a glass of this over ice. OR, I can pour a cup of the tea into a coffee mug, and microwave for about 2 minutes. This is my recipe. I had issues with constipation as an early post op, and got a prescription liquid med to help. DAVE

Thanks so much to you all for the advice and kind words. You are very right in that I just had major surgery and my digestive system has been turned upside down. This is just really uncomfortable.

Thanks

This is common, and nothing to be sorry fabout for asking, there are many many threads on this in this Stupid Q section. However, you should ask your surgeon what you can take, even though everyone's given you ideas. In fact, your surgeon KNOWS that this is a common problem, so he should have a good solution for you.
((((HUGS)))) Hang in there.

Funny thing is, i had no problem with constipation until now. For the past 2 weeks or so I have been really really constipated. I had absolutely no problems with it until now. I am almost 5 months out. I try to eat lots of raw veggies and drink lots every day. I don't want to become medication dependant for relief but am starting to feel like I will have to take something.
