| Signs & symptoms of possible problems???
Hi all - as of this coming Wednesday my 21-year old daughter will be three weeks post-surgery. She's been doing great and has lost nearly 40 pounds. We took a mini-vacation this weekend and she did fantastic - even swam a bit. However, on the way home today we stopped a few places and after walking just a few feet she complained of shortness of breath. Is this something I need to be majorly worried about? I do plan to call the doctor tomorrow if this continues.
Did/has anyone experienced shortness of breath since having your surgery? She says she thinks she just overdid it with the dip in the river. My mother kind of scared all of us by mentioning the possibility of a blood clot.

You know, just 'cause the damage on the outside doesn't look all that dramatic doesn't mean that there isn't significant repair going on inside! She has had her guts pulled apart, sliced, diced, stapled and otherwise mutilated, and it takes the body quite some time to recover from that. Three weeks post-op is a time to rest and let the body heal, not go skinny-dippin' down at the ol' swimming hole!!
We have a lot of members who can't face the thought of returning to work at a month or more. I was on half-days at 6 weeks because I had no stamina. That, I think, is the norm. Bless her heart, your little girl not only has had MAJOR surgery, but her body has also lost 40 pounds. There is trauma a-plenty in her young life right now. Tie her down, place a bottle of water in one hand and a remote in the other, and tell her you'll bring the bedpan when she needs it, 'cause she is not to get up and exert herself!!

| Here's my rule of thumb ~ if in doubt, check it out! Your daughter's surgeon got paid good money to do her surgery, so if you have concerns, def call him - yes, it's ok to call on Sunday nite Why spend the night worrying your self sick, or worse if there is a problem, just make a quick call ~ he/she may have a legit reason why she feels the way she does, since he/she did the surgery, they'll know why a particular problem may exist or if they feel it's totally unrelated and needs further investigation. By the way, it's really great you're there for her. She's still early out, I was so still on the couch at 3 weeks, so encourage her to get lots of rest, TLC, and lots of sipping to get in her liquids/nutrition. Thanks for writing

Shortness of breath can be serious. If is does not resolve itself within minutes, you need to go to an emergency room. It most likely is nothing but no sense in taking a chance. It could just be overdoing it or something by far more serious. Don't take shortness of breath lightly.

At three weeks out, most surgeons will not have released you to go swimming or any other strenuous exercise. Most likely, your daughter is okayed yet only for walking, no resistance exercise as of yet, either.
You need to check everything out with the surgeon at this stage, not just the symptoms that are going on, but going up one stage in exercise, etc.
If in doubt, ALWAYS call your surgreon.
((((HUGS)))) Hope she's feeling better now.

| Yeah what Doc said... You are way to early out for that kind of exertion. Her mini vacation should have been her sitting in the shade with a cool bottle of water and a paper or ipod relaxing. Your insides take a lot longer to heal then the outside..

I agree with all the above. Call the Dr let them know. I know she wants to do stuff so bad but right now she is still healing its hard to remember that and trust me dropping 40 pounds is hard on the body. The body is like what in the world???
Call the Dr. it will put you to ease and her also.

| Update on daughter!
Thanks to all for the sound advice. We did contact the doctor and went and saw her today; lo and behold, Emily is suffering from a bit of anxiety. Too much change all at once. She was actually encouraged to move around a lot more and her plan is to go back to work this week. Thanks again to all!
