Question Confused, What to buy??

Hi all, I'm going food shopping today, and needed some advice as to the best things to buy. I am 6 days post-op and still on my liquid diet with Jello, and broth. My Surgeon says that the 2nd week I can start adding skim Milk,( Lactaid if lactose intolerant), and protein Shakes. I will probably want to stay away from the skim milk, so I 'm thinking about no lactose, What are some of your favorites???
I also get the Slimfast low carb protein shakes( 1gram sugar sucrose). What is a safe gram amount to take that I won't experience Dumping. I am very fearful of Dumping, as I experienced extreme Nausea & retching in Hosp. Is there a good high Protein, low carb, sugar free powder out there that I could add to my Lactaid ? What are some of your opinions? Thanks

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Are you on general liquids? I hate Jello . I lived off greek yogurt, Very high protein about 13g , lowfat cottage cheese. I used Slimfast low carb shakes as well as pure protein which had 35g protein. I had no problems with skim milk. Popsicles s.f. were my life savers.

The only one who can tell you how much sugar is too much is your pouch, and it ain't shy about it!! Where you are now, your tolerance will change frequently, and what worked on Monday may not on Wednesday, and vice versa. You have to feel your way through the next month or two.

What constitutes a "good" protein powder is a question often discussed here, but never resolved. One person will say that product "A" is the cat's meow, another will say it reminds her of a different part of the cat! What tastes really good for one, another may not be able to gag down. Your mileage may vary! I'm sure you'll get some ideas soon here.

I like the Precision Engineered protein powder I buy at Vitamin World, but there are many, many others out there I have never tasted. Whatever type you get, read the label before you buy it! Body building protein powder has enough sugar in it to make your day miserable!!

Good luck!

Ok, I'm glad you told me Perfesser, because I was going to look at the body building powder, eek !! I figured it had a lot of protein , and less carbs, because that's what the body builders are always looking for. I didn't know it had that much sugar in it ??

Lauralee, I also have a hard time with milk and milk products. It took me the longest time to find GNC soy protein. It has zero sugar/carbs and 25 g of protein and taste better than whey (to me).
GNC Pro Performance® Soy Protein 95™ - GNC PRO PERFORMANCE - GNC

Very good luck with your journey.

Whatever you buy, only get small samples! Most of the protein products you try are going to taste nasty. You might get lucky and find one or two that are tolerable. I tried just about everything out there and couldn't find anything that I liked. Finally settled for EAS protein drink, tolerable but not yummy - LOL still have a bunch of it in the pantry.

I found ways to get my protein from foods: low fat milk with carnation instant breakfast and some added cocoa (did you know cocoa has protein?), yogurt, cottage cheese, pureed meats, eggs, and REFRIED BEANS (kept me alive, bless the Mexicans).

I love Unjury chocolate protein. You also can buy samples at Unjury.com

Hey SuziQ, I remembered that we both shared our surgery dates. Glad to hear your doing well. I had some bumps in the road with nausea & retching, but am fine now.
I think I will try the unjury protein. I've heard great thinks about it .

I like Health Wise fruit drink mixes. Not milk based, more like Crystal Light. 15 g protein per 8 oz serving.
