Question Anti-Depressants before & after?

I take a time-release anti-D., and I'm wondering how that will be managed post-op. Obviously this is a question for the surgeon and for my pysch, but was wondering what your experiences have been? TIA!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Gastric bypass patients have to be taken off time release medication and have the prescription changed to more easly absorbed medication such as OD (oral dissolvant) pills.
Check out the link in this post, it's a good and comprehensive article on this matter.

P.S Moving this thread to Stupid Qs as the subject fits in better.

My cousin is actually taking some zoloft. Is it a time release anti-depressant? will she have to quit it for her operation??
how does it occur????
I think she is also taking paxil for her insomnia problem.
Is it a problem for the future surgery that she wants to do?? what her doctor are going to do?

If your cousin has these medication prescribed by her doctor, what she needs to do is ask the dr who prescribes them what to do. No one else can advise her, nor answer that question with any accuracy.
Medication prescription depends on the condtion of the patient, and that condition is something that the dr who is actually treating the patient is the only person who knows.

I take a milder med but as I tried to go without it was not a good thing and it was not long before I was back on it.
My surgeon said it would be fine to take., it is such a tiny little pill, but as it is called my Happy Pill., it is a life saver to me and as of right now I cannot go without.
In time maybe my metabolism might change, who knows. But being off the med 2 months after my surgery was so diffecult it will be awhile before I change things.
I am wondering if it added to the normal downies that we have post op...hmmmm.

Good luck to you on your medication.

Hi Butterfly girl!
I've been on Effexor XR for several years. I am 5 wks out on my surgery. I was continued on it in the hospital after my GBS (after a couple of days). I've continued it at home with no problems. I guess you would just have to discuss the type of med you take with your surgeon.

my two cents chimed in....

KNOWING post op that mood swings come into play and depression
its best this matter be discussed pre op. I never took anti depressants
pre op but boy did i have some blue moments post op...and couldnt understand why if i had just lost 100 lbs why i wasnt happy.
SO do discuss the plan for this with the doctors

good luck
