| For Doc: Giving Blood?
Doc: I am writing to ask about giving blood? I remember being told by my surgeon's office that after the surgery I should not plan on giving blood. Not that I had before the surgery because I'm a big woosey when it comes to blood -- but I am now working for The American Red Cross and I'm thinking I really should get over my fear and give some -- that is if I can medically?
Can I?

Good question. I have been a donor in the past and am wondering if I still can be.
Awaiting the answer!

What's the criteria for donating blood? Red Cross and other blood banks have one, so the first thing to do is to check that out. They should have standards about people who had surgery etc, especially for infectious diseases that can be contracted through blood such as viral hepatitis, BSE, etc. For instance, I can't donate blood here anymore because I spent more than 24hours in Great Britain in the late '80s when BSE was an ongoing issue there, due to the Japanese Red Cross criteria.
Your surgeon's concern probably is that you are more susceptible to anemia due to iron and VB12, VD absorbtion issues. Even if your numbers are fine, it may take you longer for your blood levels to recover.

Thanks Doc, that at least makes sense in terms of why they recommended not to give blood. I will check with the Red Cross and see. Although in my conversation with one of the head nurses for the Red Cross here, she did say that because of all the medical advances they have made with blood collection and processing, that many of the "older" requirements no longer apply, but they can't get the "word" out there that people should try again. Here in the US only 5% of people donate blood -- just increasing it by 1% would save so many more lives. So I'm hoping that I will be able to find a way to donate. Thanks again!

This is a very good question. I have always wanted to give blood. My chances though every time I went to give I had just had some type of surgery and found out I couldnt for atleast a year after. So...... please let us know. I wonder if the meds we take also would interfere with any of that?

And to add to this........ People who give it are life savers for sure. Back last November 6 people saved mine........ yes I had to have 6 units to get back all that I had lost because of a ulcer. It does make a huge difference to let somone to live.

I have a rare blood type (AB+). I was once called in by the Red Cross Center to provide half of a total blood replacement for a preemie with Rh factor rejection. I've given 6 gallons so far, but none since surgery. I'd like to know if I can get back in the game.
(I've also been matched as a marrow donor a couple of times, but never had to go all the way through with it. Another worthy thing we can do to save a life without major inconvenience.)

My dad is AB- very rare. On his 71st birthday (a few years ago) he gave his 17th gallon. He too did a direct transfusion to save a newborn. Giving blood is a tremendous gift to mankind.

I was just wondering the same thing. We're having a blood drive at work tomorrow, and I was wondering if I'd be eligible. I guess I should just call the Red Cross. ??
