Some people don't dump, but the majority does. Dumping occurs because of the new layout. If you are one of the ones who dump, then it will stick around for the rest of your life. Generally, around 6-8gs at a time in pure glucose weight seems to cause dumping. So, a very small bite may be safe, but if you are a sugar addict, then it's best to avoid sweets the best you can, including rewarding yourself. Reward yourself with new good looking clothes, not sweets.

Okay....here is my confession......I wanted ome choclate so bad the first 2 months. I bought and ate some sugar free reeses cups. I ate two a day until they were gone. It was great! I haven't had any since. Watch for the sugar alcohol.
Now I have a sugar free, fat free choclate pudding with a spoon of sf, ff cool whip. It does the trick for the craving.
I think if hold out and the longer u do they craving subsides. The further out i get the less my focuc is on food as a center point of my life. It seems to be now....I eat cuz I have to and I try to get what i need for the day when I choose something. I don't feel the need to reward myself with food anymore.

In the recipe section you will find a recipe for a chocolate cake you make in a mug. Kitty56 contributed it and it is really good, especially with SF pudding. You will also find a brownies recipe that clancythecamper posted. Both are chocolate and both are legal for those who are some ways post-op.

Hopefully for you - you won't even want it anymore. I used to LOVE vanilla everything. Now I can't eat it at all. I can't drink anything sweet now and I used to live on fruit drinks, whether they were diet drinks or not. So keep your fingers crossed that it'll be that way for you.
Part of our problem is that we're always thinking ahead about food. We always rewarded ourselves with food. I get my cravings but all I have to do is smell something I'm craving and that's enough for me right now, but then again I'm only a little over 2 months out. I also say to myself that I put my body through all of this so I will fight fight fight against those bad cravings.
Of course, at some point you can have those sinful things but in a very limited quantity and certainly not often. Maybe you'll wind up loving all those alternative things to satisfy your cravings and won't want the bad stuff. We can only hope.

I have been having some sweet cravings lately, but I do dump so I am very careful. But, I did break down and have some no sugar added ice cream the other day. My kids wanted to go to an ice cream shop and I had not even attempted ice cream since my surgery. I was pleased to find a no sugar added ice cream there and I got almonds and strawberries added in. I didn't eat very much at all, but it was very satisfying.
You will find that you care less about sweets and you will find little ways to cure your cravings that are not loaded with sugar.

Your best bet is to stay away from sweets. Period. Afterall WLS means a significant LIFESTYLE change. Out with theh old & in with the new. That said, sometimes the best way to curb the beast is to have a taste. Only you can decide if you want to ride on that pony. Personally, I still don't feel hungry and don't crave anything. Thank Goodness.

The reason I said that those recipes are legal for those who are some months post-op is that these are called trigger foods. They are so deeply associated in your mind with other temptations that they can trigger cravings for those other things, too.
You know your own strength. It would be colossally foolish to tempt yourself to stray!! There are plenty of folks who'll do it for you without even being asked!!
One of the great keys to success with this is to learn to use foods with skill and wisdom to achieve your desires. You are in charge, unless you yield to temptations, and even that is a conscious choice.
If it seems like too much of a risk - DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!
It's just that easy!

| I have not experienced dumping and hope I never do. I think I cut out most of my high sugar eats far before my surgery so those habits were already taken hold. I like sugar free chocolate pudding sometimes and will eat it. I don't think its impossible to have chocolate after surgery, there are many things that you can buy that are safer chocolates to eat just do it in moderation if you do it. Otherwise leave it alone. If I see someone eating a candy bar and looks so good I think I simply have to try a bite, then I just go ahead and have one bite! 99% of the time I don't feel like having more then one bite, not sure if its because of the new stomach or what it is, but one bite seems to be enough for me. It can stir up old cravings like other foods will do, so you really have to be careful and choose wisely. Instead of celebrating with food when you reach a goal try celebrating with something else not related to eating, form a new habit with that choice.
