Weight Loss Method Sleeve Gastrectomy | I am just getting started on my journey and have not had the gastric bypass surgery yet. I would like to know your experiences during the 1st month after surgery...I am assuming this will be the most difficult time.

| Hello there and welcome to the boards. Well, everyone is different, which I think you know that. My first month wasn't so much the medical problems, but the fact of knowing what I had to start doing in order to be on my way. I knew I had to start exercising in moderation. THAT WAS A KILLER JUST TO THINK ABOUT IT. My surgeon had me on a clear liquid diet for the first 3 weeks after surgery. NOW, THAT WAS HELL ON EARTH. The way it seems on this site, though, many people start off with 3 days liquid, 3 days pureed foods, and then, they are off on there own. I was too jealous with hearing that. I did it though, because it was my surgeon's protocol. The next 3 weeks were pureed foods. I thought at that point, I thought I had died and went to heaven. I had open incision RNY, and the recovery time is a little more uncomfy, than if you would be having it done LAP. Anyway I thought about it though, is this is what I have always wanted, and I was sticking to it. I did, and am very happy I did. All of the few minor, modes I got into, were not even comparable to the rewards of having it done. THEY ARE TOO MANY TO MENTION. Keep all of us posted on your journey. LOVE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE ABOUT ANYTHING. GOOD LUCK TO YOU. |

| Super Moderator | Welcome to the board, jb, thank you for joining us. What stage of the journey are you on? Do you already have your date, just doing the research, or going through the loops for approval? Whichever stage you are, good luck, ((((((((HUGS))))))) and may your journey go well.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | HI Jbarfield!!!!! WELCOME first off to the boards! YOU will find alot of great information here and a bunch of great folks from all over the world! As to your question about the first month. Well im gonna say it was major surgery and everyone recovers differently and tolerates pain differently. i had my surgery lapriscopically with no complications. I had surgery on a wed am and was sent home on SATURDAY mid day. I was happy to go home and finally shower for me they didnt allow showers while i was in the hospitol do to all my hookups. IN the hospitol i did alot of laps around the floor i was on...walking helps and they really push you to get up and walk walk walk during your stay in the hospitol. I was not shy to use my pain pump and for me the most painful for me was getting in and out of bed when the weight in my stomach would move around. SO i learned to use the pain pump at these times to help me thru. I carried alot of my 310 lbs right in the stomach...so might be why. PERSONALLY i didnt sleep in the hospitol do to the fact i had undiagnosed sleep apenea and everytime i dozed all the alarms went off that i was breathing. OH well i guess my pulmonary guy missed it totally such is life. I didnt do well sleeping the first two nights at home either...wasnt really able to lay flat on my bed, and managed to sleep off and on in a chair...sure wished i had a recliner folks say that woks the best for those frist couple of nights. I had lap surgery so had no drains nothing which can be uncomfy. I didnt like takeing my pain pills and i personally weened off them very fast. MY sugeon requires them crushed up and i just couldnt tolerate getting them down early out. ITS not easy the first days home, i of course did as most people and had a minor emotional crying bout....of OMG what did i do to myself....and thinking this was a big mistake...but i think its just a phase we all go thru. EVERYDAY home got easier and easier and before long i was doing better and better. I even went back to working earlier then my surgeon okay but i was very careful to not lift anything. I am fortunate with my work its all at my own pace and i took it slo and easy......so back to work went fine. I will say it took a good 6 weeks to feel better. I would tire easy but nothing i couldnt manage and a 1 hour power nap worked wonders for me. I did the best i could those first weeks home following my surgeons instructions to the exact. I sip sipped sipped. Here every surgeon is different and you should follow what yours wants you to. I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks. then moved up to milk based liquids... then pureeed then onto regular foods one at a time...be careful to chew chew chew. I was on chewable centrum multi vitamins and tums from the first days home......it really wasnt nearly as bad of a time as i feared. I would say(but i had a bad experience and took very ill) it was far easier then my c section to recover. ALL and all i would do this again in a flash! ITS been a wonderful journey for me so far! SURE there are down moments too but i get thru them with the help of support meetings, support boards and great friends and family! LAP surgery really wasnt that bad recovery. I had no staples no stitches my tiny incisions were taped closed and to this day 18 months later people cant even see my marks HOPE this helped and i look forward to getting to know you. EVERYONE will share there stories!!! GOOD LUCK!

Weight Loss Method Sleeve Gastrectomy | I am just going to the seminar this Saturday and then I will have to start the process of getting pre certified from insurance. I already have a cpap machine, I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and my BMI is 47. There is also a family history of heart problems and diabetes. I am anxious to get the surgery done.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | my 1st month wasn't too bad. I had my surgery on a Friday afternoon and went home Monday morning. The pain meds they sent me home with made me very sick so I couldn't take any pain meds but after a couple of days didn't really need any so wasn't too bad. I was on clear liquid diet for the first two weeks home and it was horrible I just wanted to be able to chew!!! I went back to work after my 2 week check up and all was fine till the second month when I develped a stricture and had to have a little surgery to fix it (and that wasn't bad either).. ALL IN ALL I would do it again!!! |

| Hi jbarfield! Welcome. You will find a lot of great advice and sharing on this site. I'm now 5 wks post op. I had RNY via laproscope. I had surgery on Thurs and came home on Monday due to the fact that I kept running a fever, not sure why. I must honestly say that the first few weeks I had quite a bit of pain. Just as Lisa said, I was not shy about using my pain pump. My MD had me take liquid Lortab when I got home which I took pretty much on schedule those first 2 or 2 1/2 weeks. The next problem was getting in all those fluids! AND protein! I was very blessed in that I didn't get nauseated. I thank God for that, but sometimes I just wanted to scream "which do you want me to do, drink or eat, I can't do both!" Just had to keep sipping. There were some emotional adjustments, as well. I missed eating. Not that I was even hungry , I just missed my friend, Food Then one morning I realized I could eat almost a whole serving of Cream of Wheat! Things started getting easier at that point. I had been walking laps through my house, now I began to walk 1/2 mile/day on the treadmill. I'm walking 1 mile/day now, either outside or on my treadmill. Things are really looking up and I'm sure it's all going to be worth it! I hope this helps a little. Good luck to you!
