Hi, I had my surgery on May 19, 2009. I really haven't had any problems until now. Last week at work around 3:30 I felt dizzy and sweaty. I had been sick a few day before and thought that was the problem. Today I had the same thing happen. I work in a Doctors office and someone suggested testing my blood sugar. It was 64. The lab girl told me 70-120 was normal. ? Just wondering if anyone has experienced this? I take lunch from 12-1. Do I need a snack in between, and if so why is this just starting? Any insight would be appreciated.

A few people have had hypoglycemia episodes.
BreeChick is pretty much a regular.
There are a number of threads here and there on the subject.
The symptoms are probably from late dumping, which is caused by hypoglycemia.
At what time and what did you eat when you had the episode? It may have depended on the type of food.
If it becomes a regular occurence, a small snack that is basically protein timed at around 2-3 hours after the particular meal, or around 30 mins before the time the episode takes place, you'll probably be able to avoid it.

I would really advise just starting now to eat a 6 meal plan to keep those drops from happening. meaning...
breakfast..snack...lunch..snack...dinner...snack before bed (a VERY important one!)
If you start testing consistently starting in the mornings you'll find a trend. That's what I had to do to figure out what in the world was going on! I found that I often woke UP with a glucose level of 55..?!..which improved when I started having a bedtime snack right before bed.
I know a lot of the surgeon's plans have the whole 3 meals a day with nothing in between, but my OWN opinion is this is far too 'old school' thinking. It's NOT about not eating between meals that keeps us from losing weight post op it is about NOT eating often enough or just enough period!
Take a week and test yourself, there are very cheap glucometers you can buy to for a week test each morning then midafternoon and late evening to see what your levels are.

BreeChick, so glad to hear you say that about eating 6 times a day. I've only had these episodes at work, when I don't eat for awhile. When at home I eat just a little often. I keep telling everyone that I know its wrong, that I should only eat three times a day, but this is working for me. So it definately leads me to believe while at work, I'm not getting enough to eat. Thank you both for your advice!

I'm another one that believes in eating 6 times a day. Bless my surgeon for putting me on this shcedule. I don't know how the rest of you survive on just 3 meals.
I too have had a few late-dumping episodes. For me, they are brought on by eating just a little too much carbs and not enough protein. It's not enough carbs to make me dump right away, but I'll get the heavy sweating, dull brain feeling about 90 min after eating and know what's going on. I'll immediately have just a small drink of OJ (about 1 oz) and follow it up with a good high protein snack.
This is how I see what is going on: when we eat our body releases insulin. In the past, we ate a lot so our body released a LOT of insulin. Now when we eat it still releases too much insulin to take care of the small amount of food, and so we go too low on sugar. The best solution is to watch your carb intake and alway, always, always eat protein with each meal/snack.

TinaC, You've probably seen me say this one before. But I believe that a LOT of the so called 'rules' the nuts and surgeons give us is out of..sorry med pple! total ignorance of our body needs long term. 3 meals a day is ridiculous I would never ever be able to do that and I'm bad about just NOT eating so I have had the pass out times, go down to the floor shaking and combative..Scarey for anyone in my life when I do that to MYSELF by not eating often.
I just really think that the nuts are not taking into account that our bodies do NOT work the same as normies. They don't seem to get it that our bodies do NOT magically 'adjust' in a year and absorb more. Unless you have hypertrophy doing on that just ain't true! (regrowth of the intestine)
It's kind of my personal soap box this long term nutrition, meals and what we need to be doing.
Long term what I find too...I eat less often I GAIN up in weight. I eat MORE OFTEN..I LOSE back down.
Protein goals are the key. Testing your glucose over certains periods of time is the way to really KNOW what is going on instead of guessing.
Plus I totally agree with Barbie..carby meals equal late dumping that also causes that profound drop in glucose levels. You have to eat protein each meal for sure!!

My surgeon and nut like to harp on the "three meals a day ONLY" rule. When I first started going to my post op appointments, I learned to LIE LIKE A DOG when he asked me if I was snacking between meals. I made the mistake of being honest about eating a healthy snack, in addition to my 3 meals and he almost chewed my head off!!
So, now I've just learned that as long as it's a HEALTHY snack... it helps me to function. And like Bree... the less I eat, the less likely I am to lose any weight.

My nut says breakfast, mid morning protein, lunch, mid afternoon protein, and dinner. It seems to work for me.

I am having the reactive hypo as well.... in fact, I actually have a diagnosis of it now.... and I do think I will be using the advice for 5-6 meals per day. I woke up this morning with a blood sugar level of 60. Today is the first time I have taken it upon waking. No wonder I wake up every morning with a crazy headache.... the more I read here, the more it's all falling into place. Now I just need to get with BreeChick and find out how to handle extended exercise with this hypoglycemia.
Tina - our surgery dates are only a couple of weeks apart, and I've developed these symptoms within the last couple of months, so I'm wondering if this is something to do with the stage we are at. I just wish I'd lost as much weight as you have.... way to go!!!
