| Are you Ever Just Thirsty?
Are you ever really thirsty and you can't drink enough?
I'm going for my consult tomorrow, and it's not the fear of hunger that makes me nervous/silly me....it's the fear of not being able to quench my thirst.
While it may be the diabetes that makes me so thirsty, I know I am never without something to drink...ever, because I'm always thirsty.
After surgery, do you ever get really thirsty, and feel like you need more than you're allowed...for example with meals? 1 ounce is tiny..Right now I have a 1litre bottle of liquid in front of me, and I'll fill it multiple times.

Actually, post op, you're instructed by your surgeon to get in enough liquids to prevent dehydration.
Most surgeons say 64oz at least.
I haven't really heard anyone saying something about thirst, rather, especially early out, having a hard time trying to get in the amount of liquids required by the surgeon.
The only limit you probably will have with liquids is the no drinking while eating rule. You need to avoid drinking 1hr to 1.5hr after your meal. If you feel constantly thirsty, this may not be easy to handle.
However, if it is diabetes and high blood sugar that is causing your thirst, then it should go away once your blood sugar level comes down with your weightloss.

Thank-you for your response. I'm glad I'll be able to still drink water regularly. I knew I had to drink water, but when I read about the meal part, and I guess my mind focused on that aspect. Thank-you again!
64oz is a good thing! |

Thank-you Lisa. You're constant positive attitude is one thing I really enjoy seeing on this board. It really is an important piece of the puzzle for those of us considering this option. |

When you consider ther other 1001 things, the entire scene will present a different picture from what you see when you are zoomed in on just one aspect.
When you are doing your research, when you go to meetings and sessions with your drs, try to keep your mind open, and always have the entire picture in your mind.
There will always be pros and cons, good and bad, with whatever medical issue that is being discussed at the moment.
If you zoom in on just one aspect, you may not hear other things that are being said that you need to hear and remember.
Try to keep notes of what is said by the professionals and the post ops at information sessions.
Go over it at a different time, and you will probably notice things you didn't while you were attending the talks.
That way, you will be better prepared for your journey.

| Not a problem
Deb,
That was not a problem for me and I drank a lot before surgery. I would usually have 2-3 glasses of water or pop with my meals. Docsanae is right, the problem was getting in all the fluids the DR recommends postop because your pouch is soooo small. Not eating with meals was difficult for me, but not that bad. I sometimes sneak a very small sip in.
I have experienced thirst when I have eaten something that was salty, but this really hasn't been an issue.
Good luck, and keep practicing sips!

I would get really thirsty and wanted to just down a whole glass of cold water. Of course I didn't. I found that when I was really thirsty, eating ice would quench my thirst better than sipping water.
