Hey guys!
I completed the first phase of getting the RNY surgery yesterday after going through what is called a "Bod Pod" measurement that's required prior to the surgery.
It's like a big metal egg that you sit in and it measures your total body fat and your lean mass.
After going over my research online beforehand, I believed that somewhere in the 145-160lb range would be realistic for someone at my height 5'8.
The results of the test showed that I am 160lbs of lean mass underneath all of this fat. I take it that I should shoot for a body weight of around 160-180 then because if I go lower than 160 I'll be losing muscle.
What do you think?

Realisticallly speaking, you WILL lose your muscle along with the excess fatty tissue, no matter what you do. You WON'T keep that 160lbs lean mass during your rapid weight loss stage. That's why exercise is so important. You need it to keep your muscles toned and prevent the loss as much as you can.
Plus, if one's weight is 160lb, it ISN'T all lean mass, it will be bones, fatty tissue, muscle plus your organs, not just muscles. The lean mass including organs for a person who's 160lbs realistically would be somewhere around 100-110lbs, bone 6-8lbs, the rest fatty tissue.

I have seen this used on TV recently. Im impressed you got to be put in one. LOL. I have seen them use the water thing on the biggest loser and have seen the egg thing used on other programs. I dont like the BMI scale for one. I have however found its OK to kinda go buy. My surgeon acutally set a goal for me and I blew past it. It was because of my start weight. He didnt even tell me what it was until I had hit it. It was 230. He said that day he felt he did his job and I had did mine. My body wasnt ready to stop losing weight. I do honestly believe you will know when you are happy with your weight. There have been a few in here who have stated they got to small and didnt feel well. When they gain a few pounds back they felt better. I do agree with that. The goal you see for me is 170. That is my personal goal I set for myself. I had gotten down below that. The lowest I ever posted for the board to see was 163. I did get to feeling really bad. I let myself eat a tad more. I sit today at 169. I weigh once a month no more than that. I maintain. I feel good. Im healthy. Im not a rail. I have energy. When I dip below my weight I feel bad. You will know when you get to low. Just remember one thing. Do this for your health.

Plus the other thing is we don't have total control on where the body will stop losing. That depends a LOT on how much length was done in the bypass. each doc is different in that.
Plus our results, especially long term? UP TO US...
I went way below my goals set by the doc who did the standard percent formula and my PCP who was a runner, body builder, extreme sports kind of guy had a much higher number too. In the end I bottomed out with a very high level of exercise and training then settled at number that was more in line with the 2 doc's numbers.
The photo album pics..that bikini pic, the after one that is so beautiful!..BMI is on the high end of OVERWEIGHT & almost into the "OBESE" portion..But I worked damned HARD for that muscle and ate to fed it in order to build it.
As with all things in this the surgery is a TOOL and we can use that TOOL to our advantage!
It is possible to the surgery and run with it in the terms of exercise and really get some amazing results, but skin on all levels is not gonna retract tight like if you were 16 yrs old again.
