Unhappy Hit a dead end...

I lost my job yesterday...which will also take with it my health insurance. I'm quite heartbroken over the loss as I now have to stop all of my efforts for the WLS. I'm not really sure what to do now... other than continue to fight for my job with the union. It's going to be quite a while until anything comes of that, though.

Has anyone had supplementary insurance like COBRA cover the surgery? The premiums are OUTRAGEOUS! But I have been getting everything in order for this surgery and all I had left was for the insurance to approve it and to pay some program fees. I really don't want to give up now. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers, guys.

This sucks. so much.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I did research on this and I am pretty sure Cobra is the EXACT same insurance you had with the company in the first place. You are covered exactly as you would have been if you were still employed. If your old employer did not have a WLS exclusion, then you should be fine...I had a friend who had knee replacesments and cobra covered it just fine...Good luck hun and let us know what you learn

Honey there is a new law concerning COBRA. It is not as expensive as it once was. Im not sure of the ins and outs so dont give up on that yet . Keep trying to push for a surgery date and get it done ASAP.

if you can afford to pay the COBRA costs then do it! and let the surgeon's office know that you are on now on COBRA and they may be able to rush through the process if they know they won't be getting any MONEY if they don't get moving on it for you.

wow! Thanks so much to all of you! I did some reading up on the COBRA policies and the government picking up 65% of the excess cost...making it more affordable. This gives me hope!

COBRA is still cheaper than paying cash for the surgery.

Good luck in the job retention or hunting. Keep us posted.

My DH lost his job the same time we were considering my surgery. I called my medical group's bariatric surgery program director when I was hooking myself up with my work's insurance so I would not have a break in care. We were considering COBRA if we had to.

Yep that is why I said they did change the law about a year ago so try to get it done ASAP. Let your DRS office know and they will move it on along for you. They do understand this more than you think. Good luck!
