I have not had my surgery, but I was wondering about a comfortable sleeping position. I normally sleep on my side, but I have noticed several of you found that too uncomfortable as well as sleeping on your back. I do not have a recliner and I don't have any room for a hospital bed. Do any of you have any suggestions? Has anyone tried using a wedge pillow?

For me It was difficult because I had open RNY. I am prone to sleeping on my left side and thats where my feeding tube was. I wound up on my right side and used pillows behind me to prop me. I also used a pillow in front of me to prop my arm (and my booby ) and then another pillow between my legs to prop. I used 2 pillows under my head. Once I got my abdominal binder on and my feeding tube out I was good to go.

My surgery was laproscopic. I had to sleep on my back for awhile, and then I was able to lay on my side with the help of pillows tucked here and there. My husband got me one of those body pillows (which is just a real long pillow), which helped also.
I usually sleep on my side also, but I was taking pain medicine at the time which made it easier to sleep in ANY position!
Good luck to you!!

I didnt have a recliner.....but the first two nights home i slept in a sitting position on the couch nodding in and out thru the night.
BY night three i attempted the bed...with pillows all around me.
I carried my weight in the middle and the shifting of the weight
caused me ouchies.
We all get thru it
i didnt go out and spend money on anything!

I had lap rny. I slept on my back with pillows to prop me up to a position halfway between sitting and laying. I then had a pillow under each arm and one under my knees. I also had what I called a "coughing pillow". It was a smaller pillow that I hugged against my left side when I had to cough. I used pillows from all around the house (bedroom, guest room, accent pillows from the couch, etc).
Every couple of nights, I was able to recline more and more on my back until I was almost flat. After about a week, I was able to sleep on my right side. It was another week or so before I could sleep on my left side. I always took my pain meds before bed and this helped me sleep, too.
To get up, I would sling my legs off, roll part way to my side and then push up with my arms.
I know this sounds like a lot, but it's not so bad, especially with the pain meds. Just keep propping (or ask someone else to prop) until you're comfortable.
Good Luck.

I too had a lap RNY. I slept in my bed since the day I got home. I did sleep either on my side or on my back and when getting out of bed, I just kinda rolled out to keep from pulling anything inside.

| For me, i have a oversized chair, and a hug ottoman, I took a pillow and put on each side of me and slept sitting up for a week......Then i was able to move to the couch to lay down.....For a week.......Then i was able to hit the bed with tons of pillows............My weight is in my tummy, so moving was ouchy for me........So sleeing on any side was hard.....So i slept sitting up............ I didint go buy anything either......... You will do fine......

Thanks for all of your suggestions, I am sure I will be incorporating them as soon as I have my surgery. I did just buy on Ebay one of those bed loungers that are adjustable.
I am hoping this will act as my recliner.

Sleeping has been an issue for me since surgery...lol....
I spent much time on my couch with my bean pillows all around me to make me feel supported. I did not have a recliner either and dont think i would have done much sleeping in it if i did. I did not find my bed comfortable at all, i have a very good firm support mattress and after my surgeries i needed something that sunk in a bit lol...my couch is extra soft so i was able to feel more comfy around my incisions.
Good luck
