| Protien shakes causing gas
I had rny on Monday. I've tried 2 different protien shakes one powder and one ready-to-drink. Both cause alot of gas and belching - which at this stage can be painful. Any ideas on why this is happening and what to do about it?

I suffered through it. Now that I'm a year post-op I have more gas then ever. I'd like to know what can be done about all the gas too. Sorry I can't help you.

i never had gas issues till post op.
GAS comes in different types...mine is the type thats painful and in the pouch......and i have to use chewable gas X rather often
to help get my gas out. (approved by my surgeon to take since early out)
SO perhaps if you experience the other kind be thankful
its not the PAINFUL kind that i go thru now and then.
NEVER gave it thought did shakes cause me the problems....
hmmmm!
Di Jako and Michele i would like to welcome you both to the boards and recommend you come start a thread say hello and tell us all about you!!!

Michele, for you at this stage, part of it is probably due to the fact that you are still in the healing stage. You must call and ask your surgeon what his/her recommendation is, but GasX is one of the choices, I think.
To di_jako, first off, welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
As Lisa/fr1endly2 says, do please hop over to Your Profiles, start a thread for yourself there, and tell us a little about yourself.
For the post ops further out, part of the gas comes from the change in what you eat, and part from the fact that your digestive route has been changed. With bypass, it's shorter, so the area where gas can be reabsorbed is smaller than before, among other things. Exercise helps a bit, but you may have to find something like GasX, or smooth move tea or whatever, to help you out.
((((((((HUGS))))))) all around.

Yes post op gas is normal, alot has to do with not getting moving as much initially post op. When drinking the shakes never use a straw, catches to much air and can cause gas. Another thing that could be doing it is the protein powder or drink you are using. Some people tend to develope more gas from soy based products. Others more from milk based products. Its a trial and error time for most intially post up. Switching things up may help.
Call the dr and see what he recomends. Gas X does help but never take anything without consulting your doc first.
Good luck and welcome to the boards.

I know for me gas/burping was a real problem. I would walk around the house literally in circles every time I drank anything. I also used to hug a small pillow and press it really hard against me when I knew a burp was coming.

Burping is not the type of gas I'm refering to. This is the smelliest gas that would curl your noise hairs. I'm at my wits ends trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I hope this is not how I'm gonna be the rest of my life. It's not all the time, but it's more often then not.

You can try some types of laxatives, or some products that say will reduce the smell (sorry their names don't come off the top of my head, but I know these things are on the market) with the blessings of your surgeon, of course.
The smell is due both to the change in your plumbing and food choices, and the probable change in the bacterial flora in your intestines. (You have certain types of bacteria in your intestines which is normal, and necessary, as they help digestion.)
Do others complain about it? Sometimes, you are the one most sensitive to such things, where others may notice, but not think much of it.
If you didn't pass gas, that would be more worrisome.
