Default Sugar=bad, Aspartame=O.K????

ok so I know that post-op most sugar foods i.e.: chocolate, ice cream, pop, will cause dumping, so in an effort to try to get used to sugar free things I have been looking for alternatives. I have found though that so many "sugar free" things are sweetened with Aspartame i.e.: Jell-O, Jell-O pudding etc...(Which I figured they would be) I have found a pudding that is sweetened with Splenda but to be honest it tastes like chocolate water.
My question is how bad is Aspartame for your pouch?
I am not a big fan of the taste of things that have been sweetened with it but if I must eat it to kill a sweets craving I guess I will have to.
I have read the posts on Sugar Alcohol, and heard there was sugar in alcohol but to be quite honest I had never heard of Sugar Alcohol till then.
I am super confused

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sugar alcohol is not sugar in alcohol. It is a type of alcohol that is derived from sugar, to put it simply. Because of their sweetness, they are often used instead of sugar.
Actually, alcohol as a chemical belongs in the carbohydrate group.

As for aspartame, so long as you don't consume it in great amounts, it shouldn't be much of a problem, but the fact that sweets, any sweets, often increase cravings rather than satisfy can become a problem. At the same time, you probably will react differently to taste post op--many post ops talk of change in taste--so, don't take anything for granted.
A lot about taste and eating is going to be trial and errror, actually, in what works for you.

I wouldnt stress the getting used to factor to much because for me and some others OUR tastes change totally after surgery and we crave and enjoy different so i think your gonna be fine post op.
ONE thing early out sweets nausiated me for some time just the smell of them.

JUST take a look at any SUGAR free candies on the market today..
lets say sugar free reeces or pepermint patties if you read the
nutritional label there is a line item for the sugar alcholos.
POST op reading labels is important...
for me i watch PROTEIN, to be high, carbs reasonable,
fat: lo and sugar and the sugar alcohols to be down
and that helps decide if I will allow my self that item
or not.

Lilly, it can all be confusing...
Sugar alcohols are just another kind of sweetener. Look on the label for anything-"ol" like mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol. They are often used in SF candies. In large amounts they seem to cause diarrhea in some people.

Thank-you,

This was an amazing post. I've learned more in five minutes on this site, than with all of my appointments with my nutritionist.

Before wls I couldn't even have 'diet' stuff. I used to say I was allergic because I got a horrible headache with even just a piece of gum. Now I find that most SF stuff is like a real treat! I love the cool whip, skinny cow ice cream stuff, crystal light and other drinks, and my new found SF rice pudding. I'm lucky where having these things once in a while doesn't cause cravings, it satsfies them. I was a huge sweet freak before wls and the fact that I can still have something and not feel as though I'm 'losing out' or giving up things, it makes this so much easier! So be patient, you may find A LOT of things changing post-op!

I do Equal in my coffee every morning and don't have any problems with it. But I have found that "sugar free" candy makes me dump! I can do the "no sugar added" ice cream if I make sure it's no more than 1/2 cup - too much and I'm dumping.

So I'm very careful around the "sugar free" stuff because I seem to be more senstive to the sugar alcohols than to real sugar. Fortunately, I don't crave the sweets like I used to. Like Lisa said, early out I could smell the sugar and I didn't like it. I could walk past the candy aisle and the smell would be overpowering.

Once in a while I really want chocolate and I've found that I can buy a Rolo candy bar and eat just one to satisfy the craving. That Rolo will last me for a couple of weeks.
