I just read a post about the Oprah show yesterday and they were talking about addictions. I wonder if you have a tendency to use alcohol as crutch before the surgery, will that addiction transfer to the weight loss as an addiction? That would be strange.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

i think it can happen at any point of the surgery.
I mean as obesite people we have some issues.
POST op we DO GREIVE the loss of food and its
a emotional time those first days home from
the hospitol....and when that substitue is made
food with drinking a problem can arise. I have also
heard many wound up with shopping addictions as
well........!!!
WITH all this i didnt get any new addictions!
and still happy with myself!!!
20 months later

Straight out.
If you already use alcohol as a crutch, the chances are, you are going to tranfer to alcohol from food is higher than those who don't. Not only does the emotional roller coaster that you find yourself on tend to make you look for a relief, but your changed routing will give you a quick high, and those who transfer the addiction start seeking that high, or oblivion.
So, if there is anyone around you, who are looking at the surgery, and tend to have problems with alcohol already, it is a wise move to start working in that area while preparing for surgery.
Even if you are only a social drinker so far, or have never take alcohol, the changed effect of alcohol post op can cause problems for you, so there are those who are taken unawares.
Not everyone will tranfer addictions, as I wrote, the transfer rate at the highest reported is around 30%, which means 70% have no problems. So, having WLS doesn't equal transferring addictions, the majority don't, but one in just over 3 people is not a small number, either.

No need to panic or be upset, but better to have these numbers in your head, just in case.

We were told in classes that even just one glass of wine will make a gastric bypass patient seem drunk. It's not absorbed in stomach as before, goes straight to blood stream. I quess there are some lawsuits out there from some having 1 drink with dinner than driving home and getting into wrecks.
I have the papers she gave us, but brain a little fuzzy right now, so will find them and give accurate update.
Take care,
Kathy

I have been thinking alot about this. I get migraines really bad and take some pretty heavy drugs that make me loopy and I think I may be easily transfered from food addiction to the precription meds. I think I will start therapy now in hopes to dis courage this. I had never thought about this until now. I am so happy its been brought up

As I posted in another thread, I just ran across this link.
Granted, it is focused on alcohol and drugs, but I think the whole of the articles are very good, and the program worth watching if you have the chance to.
There may be some info in there that you can use to help you, even if the entire pacakage itself does not relate to you.

As far as the addictions go---I've seen way too many turned to something else---it doesn't have to be alcohol---that is just what they seem to focus on---but I know of some who become addicted to exercise---and the shopping---sheesh---I have online friends who have maxed out numerous credits cards---one to the tune of 45,000 dollars--by using as she called shop therapy---
my big addiction has always been food---I'm a serious emotional eater---when I had surgery---my therapist started seeing me on a weekly basis for the first year----but then again surgery sends you on an emotional rollar coaster anyway---

as far as the meds getting in your system goes---I've had some serious issues with the rate of absorption of some meds---I was advised to take half as much but twice as often
On that tylenol cold multi-symptom---doesn't it have some alcohol in it like nyquil??---can't remember---
