Welcome MsVickie, Congrats on making THE DECISION. On the smoking thing, my brother was a very very heavy smoker but after 2 of my brothers having a cancer scare and my Dad dying of cancer at 56 he decided he had better quit. My sister in law got him committ lonzenges and has not smoke in 12 weeks. I would never have thought he could do it as heavy as he smoked, but he has. May want to give them a try. She buys them at Sams. Good luck on preparing for WLS. We will all be here together for your journey. Mattie

Hi Vickie, My name is Tammy. Welcome to the boards! I'm about 4 months post op now, and I must say that I have not had any trouble with my hair or my teeth, so far. I'm not a smoker, so I'm afraid I can't help ya there, other than to suggest looking into the meds being used now to help people quit. I work with a couple of people who have recently quit smoking and it seems they have had better luck with some of the new meds they are using now. There's a new one out called Chantix that seems to work pretty good. Good luck through this process. Feel free to come to this board with any questions or concerns.

Weight Loss Method Physician Prescribed Diet/Exercise | Hi! Welcome to the Forums! I have experienced severe dental issues around weight loss. However those problems were related to yo-yo MASSIVE weight loss/gain on no particular plan, w/no vitamins/calcium! My Dentist looked at the numbers of root canals I needed, the INTERIOR tooth decay I had (they LOOKED fine)--and had to ask this 225lb middle class profession woman if she'd ever experienced "multiple bouts of malnutrition". To say the least, it felt very shaming to explain that I had this terrible addictive cycle going on. My teeth did not show signs of problems until about 2 years after the worst of the yo-yoing. So it's not an instant thing. The problem that I described above is totally different from being on a controlled "change your life" weight management long term program w/medical management, vitamins, supplements & calcium. I believe there is more to be gained medically & in life by leaving a life of obesity behind, than there is risk to your teeth so long as you are not foolish. It's not healthy to starve yourself & deplete your body to "look good", which is what I used to do! I wish you the best of luck and good health on this journey!!! XOXO Mya |

- I've had no issues with my teeth...and I am 11mos. out. This is actually the first time I've ever heard of anyone with 'teeth issues'....or heard of any concern. - About your smoking....I'm sorry you are having this dilemma...you will overcome! I can hear in your writing the excitement and passion for your WLS....I know you will figure out a way to quit smoking! (I know you've been given MANY suggestions...but, I'll let you know that my uncle smoked for 40 yrs...and a few years ago - quit....cold turkey - he did the hypnosis. He's never had another cigarette!) YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Thanks for yalls imput. I spoke to my cousin again addressing the same issues that I asked here knowing she battled both. From what I understand from her it was the fact she threw up alot and she needed dental work before she even considered the WLS surgery. Being so vain for me to lose teeth verus saving my life is silly I know but I work with the public daily. When I finally got insurance to cover dental work I have taken full advantage of it. You can get numbed up only so many times before it freaks you out !! LOL The hair loss only bothers me because I already have very fine thin hair. I have researched this surgery so much I wanted to really ask people who have had this done and what the thoughts were. You ladies inspire me so much watching yalls progress. I have read many of the topics. I see My current Dr. on March 27th. I reasearhed him as well. Seems he has been doing this for over 20 years. Im happy so far with results from his patients. I will let yall know how that visit goes and see if he has any insight to what I have asked here. I do have one other question...Have any of yall noticed joint pain afterwards when you started using artifical sweetneers such as Splenda? |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | ....I don't think it's vanity.... I think it's great for you to look at all the angles, as not to be surprised later! Esp. since you have done some healthy investment in your teeth! About your hair....we all have "something" about our hair...I've noticed a lot of us who have weight issues take pride in our hair....so when we start losing weight and our hair at the same time - it's a bit unsettling!~ I FREAKED..... I had to chronicle it in my BLOG!~
