Default Need to gain???

So I went to the seminar that is required before your first appt with surgeon yesterday and asked them to weigh and measure me on their scale since I am so close to 40 and a few lbs either way really matters. Well it turns out I am an inch taller than I thought and therefor under 40 BMI. I scheduled my appt for Jan 12th - apprx 6 weeks away. I need to gain 23 lbs to qualify. Any suggestions for foods/supplements/pills to help with the gain. Please no negative comments and how stupid I am to try to gain to lose. I have yo'
yo'd for my whole life and I know that given time I will most likely go back up at least 30-40 lbs because at the moment I am actually at my lowest weight ever as an adult and would hate to work on my weight for a year and then end up back at 40 bmi when in a year I could get through the process and already be post op. Any advice, thoughts or common stories would help me out.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Good luck with your process.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Hmm...first, do you have any comorbidities? Even if your BMI is below 40, if it's above 35 (which, quite obviously you are) if you have comorbidities-diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or tryglyceride levels, sleep apnea or (though this isn't a comorb) PCOS, you may very well qualify.
And before you say you are quite healthy, make sure your blood labs and sleep study prove that you are. In other words, many people are not aware that they actually have one or another of those comorbs, because they think they are feeling fine, and have not taken the time to check if they are truly fine. One of the most unnoticed comorb is sleep apnea, so if you have never had a sleep study done, get one done, as sleep apnea is one of the top comorbs that insurances approve.
Gaining weight with the objective of getting approved for surgery can come after this.

Incidentally, don't forget to make sure what the specific requirements for approval your insurance is, as insurances vary so much.

Default Sleep Test

I thought of the fact that I may have co-morbidities that I don't know about but am worried that if I go in at my current weight and ask them to test for sleep apnea and then don't have it I will be denied and then have to pay for the doctor visit and the sleep test.

Have you gone in for a complete physical from your PCP recently. They would normally run all routine blood work on you to tell if you have some of these problems and normally ins. would cover that. Also you could say you are not sleeping well at night and that you snore ect. My dr said well lets run a sleep study test on you and see what is going on. My ins. paid for it even though I don't need a c-pap machine but they did say that I have mild to moderate sleep apnea and that I need to loose weight and not sleep on my back and that my spouse needs to keep an eye on me. I thought that was funny because how is he going to keep an eye on me if he is sleeping. The WLS center is going to require you to have a sleep study anyways, you might as well get it over with. I wore heavier clothing ect that made me a bit heavier and they measured me a 1 smaller because I did not stand up completely straight. LOL They didnt care. They said the bigger the better to show the ins. company. I have not had my surgery yet, I am still in the process of going to all my classes and having all the my tests done. I am considered a light weight but I do have several co-morbs. Good luck.

Take a good look at your insurance. Many of them will want a development on your weight, if they know you got weight just to qualify that may be a problem. It may be easier to accept that you've lost some pounds preparing for the surgery instead. Just check what your insurance requirements really are.

I ate ice cream cones every day for a month. I would also have them remeasure you - did you have shoes on by any chance? Even if you didn't I would say that you did and then do the slouchy thing. Ditto heavy clothes.

Even without my heavy clothes and such my BMI was 37 but they said the heavier the better. I did have to show a 3 year history of a BMI over 35 which I had no problem showing that. I guess it is all on what your insurance co. requires. You might want to check and see what your ins. requirements are. Good luck.

ok i am so not supporting this suggestion I am simply passing on what I have heard other have done. I understand your frustration and the yo yo dieting issue as I have been in that boat and knew that I needed this surgery or my weight was going to rebound and go higher in only a matter of time. (I did complain of joint pain as my feet and knees did hurt and I was prediabetic which counted as comorbidities). My BMI was 39 and I was approved. However I did hear stories (I did not do this or know of this first hand) that people wore ankle weights to their weigh in. To me I do feel this is wrong as they have a set of standards that should be met so that people are using this as a form of cosmetic surgery however, I think I would worry more about you eating yourself to death. I would really see if you can meet with the your PCP, get a full physical, ensure that you don't have comorbidites and then see where it goes.
Good luck and I hope you are proud of your hard earned weight loss!
