Unhappy Not wanting co workers to know I had surgery

Hopefully I am not wearing out my welcome being new and all, it's just I have so many issues and questions.

When I made the decision to have surgery, I told no one (except hubby). As my pre-op prep was going along I decided to tell my mother and my best friend. Those were the ONLY people I told. I am facing a fear of going back to work (other than this darn pain in my side!) of them finding out. I am trying to think of different ways to hide my weight loss, even though it is only 20lbs so far. How IRONIC.. I spent so many years trying to cover up my weight, now I am trying to cover up the loss! I feel as though my co-workers (or I should say a couple of them) will pass judgement. One particular woman even had suggested to me that I get gastric bypass a couple of months before my surgery! I was very insulted. I mean to hear somone say they think you actually need it, hurts. I really do not want to prove this woman right. Is this out of the norm? Sometimes I think I am off my rocker for thinking this way. As for my extended family, they do not know either. I feel as though this was a personal decision and I am somewhat of a private person. Has anyone else felt this way?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I wouldnt say a word .....I know i told very few people about the surgery because i didnt want to hear negative or all the horror stories about the surgery. I only told who i had tooo....

as i was looseing i just accepted the compliments and smileing graciously.
OF course as the weight loss grew and grew and i was happier with me
i decided who i would tell that i had the surgery and who i wouldnt.

I didnt feel it was everyones business and i guess of course in case i fail and regain then no one would know....its very normal what your going thru.......and i kept it pretty private!

HUGS and dont worry your not asking to many questions! KEEP them comeing!!!

Tammy, if you don't want to tell people don't. There is a lady that works in the office down the hall that we are sure had the surgery but she won't say. She was out for five weeks, came back and never said a word. When it became obvious that she was losing weight and someone asked her how, she just told them diet and exercise. Which, BTW, is not a lie. You are definately on a diet, and should be exercising.

After she lost 100 pounds in 5 months we were all pretty sure what surgery she had but she has not admitted it and no one asks her flat out. You will find that most people will not say anything point blank if you do not tell them first. They may beat around the bush, but like I said, diet and exercise is not a lie.

So I shouldn't feel bad that I am keeping it to myself. Wellthere is another problem. A certain co-worker kept pressing me for info before I left. The comment was made that she could find out anything she wanted about anyone. This particular person made a comment to me the day before I went out and pretty much let me know that she knew what I was having done. Since then I have found out that she possibly called the Hospital the day of my surgery. Just to give you a background. I work in a Dr office and this employee is our surgery scheduler. I was told she got a call from the hospital I was in 5 minutes after my scheduled surgery time. Funny thing is, our doctors don't do surgeries at this particular hospital. Now my fear is everyone is going to know wether I like it or not! I am upset because it was not her place to tell anyone, not to mention the HIPPA violation. I will continue to let everyone think I am just dieting. However if someone comes right out and asks me directly If I had the surgery, I know I couldn't tell a lie!

Or if someone is rude enough to come right out and ask, you can always tell them why you were out is a private matter you would rather not discuss. If they won't take that for an anwer tell them to take a Flying Leap!

I had opted not to tell a soul except close family. I work in a medical office and didn't want my physicians and co-workers critical comments. Due to certain circumstances, I then decided to talk openly about MY
decision to go under the knife. Before I let anyone speak, I made it clear that if they had nothing supportive to say to keep their mouths shut! I can't stress enough how supportive they all were! And, it felt as if I got something off my chest; my secret was out in the open. Before I told them I felt like a failure.... I couldn't (or wouldn't) lose weight on my own, but, they pointed out to me that this was a tougher way to lose weight once and for all. This is life altering; not a simple diet I could choose to stay on or get off. I'm thrilled they know and have no problems talking about my upcoming surgery to anyone. Hooray for us who have made this decision!!!!

Yes those HIPPA laws that are supposed to protect our privacy are a joke sometimes.....
As for telling people that is a personal decision. People that make negative comments are the ones who are not educated on the surgery. For me, i personally feel this surgery saved my life. If it was weight watchers that did it for me i would be yelling it all over so my personal choice is if i have the time i will tell people {i say if i have the time bec as soon as i say i had the surgery a million questions arise} if i am in a rush i just say im not eating as much as i used to. im not lieing when i say that i just left out im not eating as much bec my stomach is smaller lol.. For me it just not something i feel i need to keep quiet. but many others like yourself feel its nobodies business and that is your personal choice and you are entitled to it. As for your office staff i would further investigate and take care of whoever it was that called and put them in there place as well! Good luck to you , its is nice to have a place like this to vent something that we all understand!

Wink Tammy....

I COMPLETELY agree with LisaMarie!
I'd not let that go to far and find out who called...and if they've violated your privacy! - That is just wrong!
(I'm soooo sorry that this is happening for you....)

As for me, I think if you don't want to share that you are a WLS patient...
Then you should just SAY THE FACTS:
  • You are on a strict "portion controlled diet"
  • You are cutting out all sugar
  • You are monitoring your carb intake and concentrating on "protein"
  • You are drinking a TON of water!!
  • You are exercising!
This is what you are doing....and if ANYONE did this...they too would lose weight! If they are looking for specifics....send 'em to "south beach diet"....now being 11mos. post op....that is pretty much what I'm doing! you'll be here soon enough!

Don't HIDE your weight loss...you have everything to flaunt and be proud of...

Congrats on being on the "losers bench!" Isn't this exciting??
I can't wait to see your before and after photos....They really are sooo fun to see! I love your avatar...you are gorgeous!

I've been "in & out" "off & on" the boards lately....since I've lost all this weight...I'm sooo active. So, I'm not home as much...it's super cold and SNOWING today....

(I can not believe just two days ago I was staining a kitchen cart on my front stoop...and today I'm shoveling snow/sleet!!! Crazy!!)
