| For all who have had any WLS a question about your taste buds
Aloha,
I am only about 5.5 weeks out still (I know a total newbie) however EVERYONE has told me about my taste buds changing post surgery. I have not had the opportunity to even remotely feel like mine have changed. Its in my head, saying that I do not want to eat that, rather then my taste buds telling me. I have not had a huge variety of food yet, I am still only eating mushy foods, but I still love and crave all of those things that I always have. Pasta (or anything in a good tomatoe based sauce), steak, meats, chilis, chowders and stews.
How did you notice that your taste buds were a changing and how far out were you?
What changed?
How much did that impact your life?

Heya. I have heard of people having something like their protein shake, choc flavoured before surgery and post op they hated it, said it was disgusting. I havent had much of a noticeable issue, though I wish I did hate the taste of sweet things.
This will be an interesting thread to keep reading. |

I would remember how yummy something tasted, but when I was allowed to eat it again, I found that it just didn't taste as good as what I remembered it to be. IMHO something was wrong with the signals from my stomach to my brain, and things tasted overly delicious and the "satiated" signal never kicked in so I couldn't seem to eat enough to make myself happy. For example, I would eat an entire bag of Lindt chocolates. I couldn't stop at one, or three, or even six. Once I started I would keep going until it was gone.
Now, chocolate tastes good. Not fantastic, not delicious, but good. And I can stop at one. This seems to be true for all food now. It's not crazy yummy anymore, just good.

I concur with Barbie. I had a chocolate truffle that someone had given my daughter (a bag of). It tasted so much different, It tasted butter-ish. I took a tiny bite off a bite sized morsel. The taste was so different, I let it melt in my mouth. I think it took me three bites to eat it but it was an all day experience. I couldn't decide if I like it or not. I don't think that I will ever have the same relationship with chocolate that I had before.

I'm also very curious about this...as i DO having craving for things I loved prior to WLS, but know now, they are no-nos for me. I did take a little taste of pumpkin pie last night...and I mean, little...and eh...it just didn't have the same effect as it used too! Now I'm actually seeing the mental battle we all go through in some form or another. I think I imagined that it was better than it was! Definitely a comfort thing for me.

I am 7 weeks out and I find the new foods i am trying just gdont have the same taste like chocolate. I attempted to eat a Hershey Kiss and it tasted gritty to me. Other food I seem to find certain flavors will pop out stronger or 'weider' than how it used to taste. hang in there you will find things to like and enjoy, I still am!

I have found that foods I loved make me sick. I loved Ice Cream adn now no matter what it makes me sick. I feel like I have the stomach flu after eating Ice Cream. I love Coffee now never liked it before, but it has to be Ice Coffee with splenda and Half and Half. I love beans now and never liked them before. Fried food do not set well with me so now when I think of fried fish I just get sick. I knew this before going into surgery and I have accepted it. I am glad those things make me sick because I should not be eating them anyway. When I want something sweet now I grab a apple. There are some many kinds of apples out there I was amazed and they all taste different. Have a slice of chedder cheese and an apple for breakfast, best breakfast I ever ate.

I asked and asked everyone on this site before about how different everything tastes now and NO ONE responded!!! I was so glad to see your post here... I am 4 months out now and everything still tasted pretty bad... I am glad though because it keeps me from eathing BAD things. A LOT of foods that I use to love, now make me sick to smell them too, not just eating them. I still find this a good thing so I don't go back to my old habbits. I can barely eat anything without pain though and have found out I now have an Ulcer!!! I can take care of this with Rx's, which is WAY better than the Stricture they thought I had at first!
