Default Questioning Cpap machine

I have been on a CPAP machine since October '06. Here is my problem. I am having excessive burping. I mean like poke my sotmach, I burp, burping! I ask my Dr. if I was getting too much air in my stomach and he had the tech come turn the CPAP down. It is now set on 18 instead of 20. Still high and I wake up a lot finding that I am breathing through my mouth instead of my nose because my nose is closed up. I take Gas X and pepcid in the evening and aciphex in the morning. Nothing really helps and I feel like a balloon about to pop. Now I am wondering if my WLS surgeon needs to be told about the burping when he ask if I have indigestion. It does not feel like indigestion, just air. I don't think my new little tummy will be able to handle this pressure. Has anybody out there experienced the same thing and if so what did you end up doing. Thanks for any input. Mattie

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Yes, do let your surgeon know about the trouble you are having with CPAP. It probably won't make any difference regarding your surgery, but he does need to know everything, and he also may have heard similar complaints from other patients.

It does sound as if you gulp extra air into your stomach. Of course, with surgery and weightloss, your sleep apnea definitely should improve, and you won't be needing CPAP for long, so, that in itself will solve the problem.

Just a suggestion, My hubby wears one each night to. I asked him about this. He said the burp part he finds is from stomach irritation from his GERD and the wearing the mask seems to bother his if he doesnt take his Nexium each day like he was instructed. Somthing you might try which is what the Dr. I work for tells his patients with GERD is to take Gaviscon each night. You can buy that over the counter. It should work on your nightly reflux if that is what is causing it. Now the nose being closed up sounds like perhaps you might have allergies? Over the counter nasal spray will help with that. It opens up the nasal passages. Just dont use it over 7 days straight. You dont want to become dependent on it. The salaine nasal spray is not addictive however im not sure what type of relief you may get from that and how long it would take you to get them open. Good luck and let me know how it works if you try it.

Thanks to both of you. I will try the Gaviscon and see if it helps. I also will tell my Dr. about it. It sure is getting aggravating and embarassing. Thanks. mattie

I also wear a CPAP mask every night. I am a mouth breather and was given a chin strap which helps keep my mouth closed at night. I don't usually have a stopped up nose, but when I did I just used a nasal spay like flonase. I have read that some people have used the stretchy headbands that are about 1 1/2" - 2" wide as a chin strap. I have even heard of people using surgical tape across the lips, just under the nose to keep their mounth shut. My mouth will always fall open and out comes the air.

Do you feel you are still adjusting to the mask? At first I would feel like it was going to blow my brains out, but I have gotten used to the thing. Does your machine have an adjustment so that it will gradually increase the air pressure until it reaches the peak. Mine does and it takes about 30 mins for it to ramp up and that used to help me. I would generally be asleep by the time it reached 16 which is my pressure setting.

I would tell my surgeon about all of this.

Thanks for the input. I may need to get a chin strap. I am pretty used to the mask. It doesn't bother me anymore, but now I have air blowing in my eyes from the top of it and just got back from the eye Dr and have an infection in my eyes. Crap!!!!! Yeah mine ramps out in 45 minutes and I sleep Ok, its just this constant burping. Mattie

Sounds like your mask isn't fitting right anymore. They tell me that insurance should cover a new mask every 6 months. Also if you have the type of mask like mine that has a membrane that holds in the silicone cushion, they can be replaced every 3 mo. When I get to my 6 months I was planning on getting the nose plugs instead of the mask. But I may not need it if I get the surgery before that time.

I agree with spikey. My hubby changes his mask every 6 months along with the tubing and filters. When first got it they never told him there were filters on it. Much to his suprise hes supposed to change them weekly! Im in bad need of one myself. I dont stop breathing but I do have frequent awakings. And snore. The hubby tells me i cut several cords of wood each night! LOL. I told him atleast he can complain about me considering I couldnt stand to be in the same house with him. Hes got Apena really bad. There thinking of doing a UPPP on him to remove all the loose tissue in the throat. Hes not even a overweight man.
