| WLS Mentor | I am wondering if anybody has found that you are less apt to get sick now that you have had the surgery? I'm just wondering because i've noticed that up until the past 2 years i hardly ever got sick, but in the past 2 years i have had 3 cases of pneumonia, 5 cases of strep throat, various cold bugs and now i seem to have some sort of virus that won't go away. I am just wondering if maybe my weight is taking it's toll on my immune system? Just thought i'd ask you'all and see what you think? Birdie

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I dont know if this helps at all just some info... Stress and Weight Gain: Can Stress Make You Fat? also this Researchers at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have found a that yo-yo dieting [repeatedly losing and regaining weight] may have a lasting negative impact on immune function. They also report that maintaining a consistent weight over time appears to have a positive effect on the immune system. The study, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, found that the more times a woman dieted to lose weight, the greater the decrease in her immune system function. They also found that immune function (measured by natural-killer-cell activity) was higher among women who reported the same weight over long periods of time. This may be the first study that shows a possible long-term negative effect of yo-yo dieting on overall health status. AND I AM JUST ADDING THIS BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IS AND HOW IT WORKS TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN OBESITY AND POOR EATING HABBITS AND ILLNESS> Immune system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I hope some of this helps you. | Super Moderator | Well, it is a well known fact that diabetics whose blood sugar is not controlled well are more likely to have various infections. Other than the immune system being wonkers, this also could be because of the high blood sugar as well...food for bacteria to thrive on. Another thing is, it is known that the more you exercise, the more NK cells you are likely to have. So, as well as some direct effect of changed metabolism because of obesity, there could be other subtle factors contributing. (Okay, I am not an immunologist, so I am getting off this soap box before I dig a hole for myself.
