Wondering if a high tsh level in itself is dangerous for surgery. I know my level was 10.08 before I started meds and am wondering if my surgeon is likely to put off surgery until my levels are more "normal" or if I may be able to move on to surgery as long as I am being treated for it.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery. Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.
It's in your best interest that the numbers be within normal range, and the condition be under control, because uncontrolled means raising the risks for surgery and recovery.
This goes for anything, no just thyroids.

Your doctor will more than likely want your numbers to be in the normal range, mine had gotten out of whack right before surgery but my PCP upped my dosage and within a week I was back where I needed to be. It will help with your recovery better if you are in the normal range.
