Default Another sugar question

I have read that sugars are no good for you after sergury. For obvious reasons I believe that to be true. Then I was reading that alot of WLS people are eating alot of fruit. Now I no for a fact there is natural sugars in fruit ie...apples , berries , oranges etc . Now do these natural sugar fruits cause problems for WLS patients.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Well JERRY!
YES i watch my sugar intake big time.
OF course some patients get DUMPING syndrome from sugary items....
the averages i hear is about 60 percent dont react and about 40 percent do. I know the first year i kept my sugars in products to under 10 grams
in an item but i am little more lax now.

SUGARS in fruits dont make me sick. ANd i tolerate them fine...unfortunately
were all different post op. I try to eat healthy as i can now....
and that means easy on the cookies, cakes, candy that are packed
with calories and sugar.

I have only dumpted twice and for me if my stomach is empty and i eat
sugary i get sick but if its on top of a meal (and some carbs) i seem to tolerate it better.

NOT sure i answered everything but fruit natrual sugars are better then the regualr sugars in cakes and goodies. BUT i limit them a bit. NOt as much now as my first 12 months post op

Hi Jerry,
For the most part I can tolerate fruit and here lately its one of the few things I can eat and feel great after. I use it as a between meal snack if I get hungry. As for other sugars I can tolerate them in small amounts sometimes, I never know if its going to make me sick or not. I try to limit the grams of sugar I take at a time
Just remember everyone is different !!

Jerry,

Again Im pre op but My Dr. told me that the best fruits to eat before or after WLS is Cantalope and Blueberries. Not nearly the amounts of sugar as even one bananna. Mabye that helped some.

Fresh fruits are mostly water--yup, water-- anywhere from 80-90%. In contrast, their total carb content including sugar is actually about 10%, some even lower, of their weight. They also contain lots of vitamins and minerals. With processed sweets, the water content goes down, sugar content up, so with the same volume, you are ending up getting in much more sugar and calories than with fruits.

There are many kinds in sugars, and you will react differently to them, so you may get dumping with some kinds, not so with others. So, theoretically, fructose, the sugar in fruit, could cause problems, but dumping also will be volume related with many, so, since the amount included in fruits is far less than marketed sweets, the likelyhood of having trouble is less.

Doc is 100% correct WATER lol.......Personally I have not touched any of the sugars in cakes, candy ets at all since surgery. Some of the stuff I have consumed have has small amounts of sugar, very small amounts so I really dont even know if i would dump or not. I prefer not to try. Sugar alcholos on the other hand i have tried and OMG if I have to much i am a mess...so i watch those closley now .....I went into this surgery with the mindset that i am changing the complete way i live my life, watching everything i put into my body and just learning new habbits so i have to honestly say i dont miss any of the junk that i used to eat. I crave strawberries, bananans with peanutbutter and cucumbers more now then anything lol........natural sugar does not bother me at all. Neither does splenda or equal....Best of luck to you, you are going to do amazing.....

Default Hey There Jerry!

Well Jerry, I am basically in the same boat as all the other members that have replied to your post. I to, can tolerate all the fruits I have tried so far. None of them bothering me one bit. Thank God, because I do love fruit too much to have to give it up. lol I limit my fruit to 3 servings per day though. I do believe that is all one needs anyway. I also tolerate Splenda nicely as well. I am like Friendly as well. If I am going to have something a little higher in sugar, I better do it with other food in my belly. I don't get the dumpy feeling with a little food in it, whereas, if I eat something like that on an empty one, I feel sorta icky. Not sick, just not as good as I would have felt if I just stuck to my normal low carb food. Everyone, you will find, does react differently to everything. It is trial and error, so to speak. You will find this out for yourself when your time comes, and good luck with it. Good question.
mike
p.s. I sent you a reply back to your pm. Did you get it? Just wondering.

JUST my two cents here i do use a 1/4 to 1/2 banana twice week
in a shake to keep my potassium at a safe level. MANY experience
issues with this. A nasty side problem can be nasty leg cramps....
so evne if a triffle high in sugar the banana in our diet is needed.
JUST me not required...but here to much of potassium deficiencies
so i didnt want to risk it along my journey.
