Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Ok, I have been a smoker for over 18 yrs. I quit before surgery, and I am doing very well with it. I haven't cheated once, and really haven't had the urge since I had surgery. I know they want you to quit before because of the whole "clear lung" aspect. I know that after they don't want you to smoke because it can cause bleeding ulcers. I am fine with that, I know the reasons, and I will keep reminding myself of why I can't smoke. But, I was sitting here thinking today (while my family was here celebrating my daughters birthday) what causes the ulcers? Is it the nicotin that causes it or is it the smoke going inside? The reason I ask is because my kitchen was pretty smokey today, with everyone smoking. And of course, I was breathing it in, so, that started me thinking. I have 2 smokers that live in my house. I still go to the smoking area at work with my friends. Am I risking my health by breathing the 2nd hand smoke in? |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | As far as the surgery and getting the ulcers from the 2nd hand smoke i would think we can.........just like its just as bad for our lungs breathing in the 2nd hand smoke and thats why today they are soo strict on this..... I havent smoked in over 8 years now and i still wound up with a bleeding ulcer post op. I also dont drink coffee which they claim is another so who really knows. I do know a person who went back to smokeing post op and she is almost 3 years out and no ulcers so who knows...... hugs

| That is a good question, and one that I would like to know the answer to as well. I am currently a smoker, and I had no problems with smoking post up. I was advised to quit 3-4 months prior to surgery. Did I listen? No! I wished I had the day of surgery, after I came out of the anesthetic. Oh God, when they made me cough. OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!, is all I can say. Naturally, being a smoker, and not quitting, as they advised, the coughing was worse. I went two weeks after I got out of the hospital 6 days later, and started up again. Naughty choice, but I just was not ready to quit. Maybe in time. Awesome job with yourself though. As far as the coffee thing, I drink it like it is going out of style. lol No problems with that either, but everyone is different. Hope to get to know ya a little better. I am in and out of the forums lately due to some issues, but try to get in here as much as I can. Take Care. mike |

| Super Moderator | There's concrete evidence--data-- that secondhand smoke puts you at higher risk for lung cancer than someone who's in a no smoke environment. As for ulcers, to put it simply, nicotine constricts the arteries, which will reduce the blood flow. Reduced blood flow causes a number of things including less oxygen and nutrients available to the organs and cells. As a result, cells can get killed, or, when injured, recover at a slower speed, or the recovery incomplete. The constriction of the arteries is also the reason smoking is bad for your heart.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | LOL That's the "bad" thing about this surgery. There just isn't any firm answers!!! Because everything is different for everyone. Makes ya crazy!!! I can see me turning my food addiction to "being paranoid" on preventing issues!!! lol And I know, you can do everything 100% right and still end up with issues. Which just isn't fair!! lol Honestly Mike, I think I was just SOOO scared of making problems for myself during surgery with smoking, it really wasn't hard to quit. Don't get me wrong, I did have thoughts of "well, just a couple hits won't hurt me", but then I pushed the thought out of my mind and moved on. I'm still amazed at how well I did. I wore a patch the first day, and haven't worn one since. Yes Friendly, I assumed 2nd hand smoke is bad, because they are always preaching that too. But I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was the actual "smoke" or "nicotine" that was the BIG problem. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thanks Doc! So basically, it's the nicotine that is the problem. Whether it is the burning of it in 2nd hand smoke, or the nicotine that is inhaled when we ARE smoking. I mean, I feel GREAT since I have quit. But it was just a thought that came to my mind as I sat there last night with the kitchen full of smoke. |
