Default Will having H. Pylori hold up the surgery

I just got a letter from my surgeon's office saying that I have H. Pylori. Duh - how about reading my file. Yes, I've had it for a year and got the ulcer to prove it. I've been treated with antibiotics, endoscoped, and put on Protonix for a year.

As far as I know the ulcer is healed (no pain as long as I stay on the Protonix) and I know that will hold up the surgery if it's not healed so they will scope me again once the insurance company gives the approval for the bypass (how's that for positive thinking?).

But will just having the bacteria hold up the surgery? I've read where it's really hard to kill this bacteria.

Oh, they also said my sugar was at 150 - looks like I might be prediabetic too.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

well i have heard thru other peoples posts elsewhere that they have to go thru the antibiotics and then when cleared up its a go ahead.
THE thing is these people didnt have the ulcer with it.......
Ill keep my fingers and toes crossed for you that this matter is resolved
and you can move forward with surgery.
I would imagine that ulcer needs full healing before surgery i devoloped the first one in my life post op at a little over a year...and had a bleed
thats how we discovered it.....so our pouches post op are very sensitive and prone to them. I followed the pouch rules and never take or did the things they say caused them but i do have a stressful life........
who knows...
good luck during this trying time

Awwww, (((((((HUGS)))))))
Unfortunately, yes, H.pylori will hold up your surgery. There have been other members in the past, how had this, and had to be treated with antibiotics, before being released for surgery.
Having H.pylori makes the risk of post op ulcers higher, especially along the staple lines early out, when the scars are not yet healed.
And, yes, also, H.pylori is hard to get rid of for some people. When you had it treated in the past, did it just stay there (I imagine you would have had a follow up check), or is it that it went away, then you discovered that it's come back?
At any rate, the only thing you can do is take the antibiotics again, and then have an F/U check. If one course doesn't do the job, a second course immediately following may.

Keeping you in my prayers that you get this cleared up soon, and be able to get on your way.

Doc is right. It will hold it up. Im on Nexium for GERD. They will treat you with antibotics for a good 2 weeks if not more. My Dr. did me once with a whole month to get rid of it. That was a couple years ago.

You have to think of it this way......its bacteria... that type is bad. They have to get rid of it honey. I personally would not have it done If it was me and I tested postive for it. That is just to dangerous. I would think they would test you right before surgery for this? I dont know but I would hope so. Most people dont know what they are tested for Pre Op. So I have no idea if they do. I hope this helped any. Were fortunate DOC is here to help us.

Thanks for the responses - though it's not what I wanted to hear.

I'm sorry to say that I don't know if they got rid of it or not. I had the blood work done which detected it, then I went on the antibiotics, and then they sent me for the endosopy and found my ulcer. The did more blood work for the endoscopy and I assumed they checked the H. Pylori level and found it was OK since they never called me for a follow up.

Hey Barbie did they start you on antibotics ? If so how long do you have to take them? Keep us up to date on this as Im sure many will ask this down the road so we can point them to this post.

When I told them I had been treated in the past for H. Pylori they said they would wait until I have a breath test to see if I actually still have it. They said they would give me the breath test when I came in for my second visit. but I just got my denial from the insurance company so I guess there won't be a second visit.

Now honey you dont give up. What ever the letter stated as to why they denied you , is the part you work on to get it approved. You need to have that blow test even if your not approved right now because its still your body and somthing is not right. That is somthing you dont want to have to begin with. Besides that when your Dr appeals this decision he will need you free of the H. pylori to do the surgery. I hope this finds you feeling ok today.
