| Hospital stay
Okay, I'm 8 days away from surgery and this really seems like a stupid question but I need an answer. What on earth do I pack for the hospital? I'm getting my surgery at PENN in Philadelphia and they said nothing that goes over the head; so no bras or sleep shirts. They said I could bring a robe, slippers, underwear, and something to wear home. What about a toothbrush? They said no liquids or swallowing for 36-48 hours post surgery. I know me and brushing my teeth will be a huge temptation. What did you pack for the hospital? How did you deal with the walking in bare feet/slippers? Did yyou brush your teeth those first couple of days? I'm getting nervous but packing and preparing are keeping me busy. Thanks in advance for the help.

| Nothing to swallow for up to 2 days????!!! Yikes! Yes, I did brush my teeth. Make sure you bring some chapstick and a pillow to hold on your tummy for the ride home. The sock slippers did me just fine as did their bathrobe. A hair brush might be good too. I did bring other things like a book but didn't have any time to read between walking, sipping and sleeping! The undies and clothes for the trip home you mentioned are a good idea too.
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! Hugs |

I took my IPOD (to block out the noise of the hospital while sleeping), I don't like my feet to be covered while I sleep (I even convinced the nurses to take those leg compression thingys off) so I brought my sandals to wear while walking, and some shorts and undies to wear under the wonderfully awesome gown they give you, and my tooth brush of course
Good Luck to you

I am a week post op tomorrow. I brought a small tote with underwear (which I did not use until day of discharge), toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip Balm, cell phone, charger, laptop, comb, lotion and deodorant.
I had a foley catheter in for 24 hrs so no undies. They had bariatric gowns (I wore one the normal way and the other as a coat to cover my butt when ambulating the hallways) and special non-slip footwear issued by hospital. They provided a toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, kiwi mango shampoo and body wash, lotion, etc
I like my own toothbrush and paste so I did not use the hospital issued one.
I was fed the next morning after the Barium Swallow study came back negative for leaks. It was clears the first day. I was also given mesh panties (very comfortable like in postpartum) to wear as they were perfect to see the incions over and not tight or abrasive.
The next day was on full liquids. Hospital gave me a shaker bottle and a can of beneprotein along with instant breakfast carnation SF to make my own protein shakes and control the sweetness.
As you can see, you don't use much. I was way too sleepy and groggy that I did not touch my laptop at all. I would have brought maybe my own pillow and case; otherwise, It was perfect.
Good luck in your upcoming surgery!!

Take whatever toiletries you want...........you'll be able to clean up and brush your teeth, take out your contacts, whatever you need to do. You'll have an IV, oxygen tubing, a pump, a drain- point being, your hospital gown is the best option for your upper body, take underwear and pj bottoms that are loose/comfortable. They'll give you some anti-slip socks, you can take slippers if you want them. I went home in my pj bottoms and a sweatshirt with my slippers. Judi is right that a pillow helps with comfort on the way home. I was in overnight, so I didn't need a book, etc. You'll be doing a lot of sleeping, walking, sitting in a chair and be on some good drugs, so you likely won't need a ton of entertainment. It's almost time!! good luck!

Hospitals are fairly public spaces, and you can't watch your stuff every minute. I didn't take anything of any real value with me. There was nothing I'd be upset over losing (except my CPAP), so of course, I didn't lose anything.
Make sure that the clothes for the trip home are loose. You don't want anything pulling tight across your belly. I wore some baggy elastic waist pants, but I encouraged Peanut to take a muumuu-type dress. She was glad she did.
The most important thing to take is a copy of all your medical records relating to this surgery!! Every test result, every visit, the whole works. Here's why.
And of course, be sure to take a good sense of humor! If you can't laugh at yourself and the situations you get into in a hospital, you really need to loosen up!!

those are some great ideas - I'll have to keep them in mind. I thought about bringing my ipad because the charge lasts longer than the one on my laptop.... I'll still be able to check mail, check on my students (if I have time and feel up to it)... still don't have my surgery date

| You won't use half the stuff you bring. I was told to bring an ID. that was it. But, bring a toothbrush and toothpaste. The rest they give you.. gown, slip on skid free socks, whatever I wore in to the hospital, I wore home. I was in Virtua in Mt Holly NJ... My girlfriend had her surgery at Penn. She was pleased. Good luck.

Thank you all so much for the tips. I'm so excited and ready to start the hard part. I just had a "milkshake" made from Protein mix, ice and peanut butter. . . The best tasting 25g of protein I've had all day. Again, thank you all for the advice.
