| Super Moderator | Hmm, well actually, no, it doesn't stretch your pouch as is. But, the temporary expanding feeling can interfere with the eating and drinking you must do for your pouch. The true trouble with carbonated drinks is, many of you were *addicted* to it, and it often triggers cravings. With/without calories isn't the problem it's the texture, it makes you remember a lot of stuff that you often had with it, and it triggers the memory, so to speak so you start craving other *bad* stuff. Some surgeon says it stretches your pouch because that is easier to understand for you, and easier to relate. I say, stay off the stuff, but, keep just one can in the fridge for an "emergency". Often, just knowing that it's there when you can't resist your craving any more, will actually help you resist the temptation.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Doc that is SO true. If i think really hard about what i ate (pre-op) with soda it was always a burger or pizza or something i shouldnt have been eating. I dont even want to tempt myself like that eventhough its "ok" everyone is different though...sometimes you just need the bubbles lol! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | before surgery? I know I am going to have big headaches from lack of caffeine. At least, I will be on pain meds if I choose to wait until surgery date. What did everyone else do?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | i think i just stopped. I stopped everything all at once. i used to smoke 2 packs a day and LIVED off caffeine; both sodas and coffees. i havent really had the urge to be honest. I was real particular about my coffee. light n sweet with cream. since i cant have sugar and my dairy is reduced to skim milk, i figure why even bother?? In the begnning, the fear of doing something wrong was what motivated me to cut it all out. now i dont really want it like i used to. Cant stand the smell of smoke after smoking for 16 years, dont want coffee, and i havent really thought about soda...thats just me though. Sorry didnt mean to change this thread into something else! |

Well, the reason you have big headaches from lack of caffeine is withdrawal. In other words, it means you are dependent on caffeine. Truthfully, I think you should try to wean yourself off before surgery. Once you are off the stuff for a while, you'll actually feel much better, but if you start on it again, then the habit probably will come right back.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I was a huge MEGA diet pepsi drinker pre op but gave it up being a rule by my surgeon. TWO years out i have not had any diet soda.... I have broken that habit completely and drink PROPEL water, crystal light, diet snapple apple, water and protein shakes and im fine without the soda. I dont drink coffee so diet pepsi was my caffine fix. I dont believe it stretches your pouch but early out thta bloat of carbonation will hurt. I know early out i couldnt even do popcorn cause it would expand in the pouch and just hurt so bad so i imaigne diet sodas would do the same. I belive, though, not all surgeons give this a no no rule mine did and i do stick to this one. GOOD LUCK
