Question Can you add protein powder to a pre-made protein drink?

I'm trying to pre-shop for protein powders but I'm so confused on what to get. I read so many mixed reviews. Can I add protein powder to an already mixed protein shake like Atkins?

This would make my life so much easier since I already like the Atkins shakes, but the protein grams are only 15g and I know after surgery I'm going to need about 60-80g a day. Please help? So confused

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

From what I understand your body can only use about 20 g at a time, so you wouldn't want to waste powder you can't use. Hope this helps.

Yep, Carol is right. And adding another powder to the Atkins shake is probably going to make it all clumpy.

They're also very high in fat, you may find that you can't drink them after the surgery. Or you won't want to.

You can add powdered milk to a lot of things to up the protein count without the fat.

i add unflavored Beneprotein (5g. protein) to premixed shakes to bring them up to 20-ish. Just a thought. And it doesnt make them lumpy or thick.

so the ones with more than 20 g of protein in a serving wouldn't be a good idea?? I thought isopure had more than that... the one I use is 10g per scoop (Bariatrix Essentials - by metagenics)... my sister recommended isopure because it has more protein in it - so you don't feel like your constantly having to drink a shake (I have to have 7 a day to reach my 70g protein) - I'll have to ask the surgeon tomorrow... he prefers the one by metagenics, but also has bariatric fusion on his website too... so much to process!!

I use EAS protein, youcan get it at Bjs or costco, , possibly GNC and mine has 23grams per scoop... hope that helps, vanilla and chocolate flavors, then i blend a banana or strawberry and wallah i get a nice breakfast smoothie... but start simple first, protein then when u are a lil advanced you can add the banana, I am 4 weeks out and i had that at week 3, tolerated well

Carol B & Nell...the information that your body can "only absorb 20g of protein per meal" is a MYTH!!!! Your body can absorb whatever amount of protein you put into it and whatever else is left will help the body with food "cravings" insofar as keeping you full.

Butterfly, you could add whatever you'd like into your shakes, however, I was advised against buying "Adkins" or "Ensure" or other shakes like those because of the "junk" that was in them and the low protein count. There are other protein mixes out there you can get that are much better for you. I know people talk about Isopure and I use Baratric Advantage and I also supplement with Nectar's Whey Protein and sprinkle the Whey Protein on my food. Last night I put the whey in my beans to help boost their protein potential. I am a vegetarian so protein is really really important for me as you carnivores out there get a bit more than I do.

My Mom also bought me one of those hand mixers or stick mixers which has helped a TON when making the shakes and not as hard to clean as a blender.

When in doubt ask AND do your research. But the body is an amazing thing and can certainly absorb more than 20g of protein at a time! Heck, that is how our species evolved...they were carnivores and would have certainly eaten more than 20g of protein in a sitting with the giant dino bone (that is a bit of a joke but you get my point).

Good luck.
