If you do not mind answering this question, I would love to know why your surgeries were open and not lap? It is two weeks before my surgery and although I am calm, my mind races with every possibility, ya know? You can email your answer if you don't want everyone to know..or not answer it that would be okay...I just was reading all of these posts and noticed two people who had it recently and it was open..

I was scheduled for a lap but they had to convert to open because I have had 2 previous abdominal surgeries: A gallbladder removal and an exploratory abdominal surgery when I was a baby. So I had tons of adhesions from them. Feel free to ask me any questions you need too!! Good luck to you!!

Mine was open from the beginning so one else did lap at that time in KCMO so the open was the only option available. -bree

Oldies, those several years post op, will often be open, as lap wasn't the norm for a while. All lap surgeries are done with preparation for going open if the necessity arises. Things like more adhesion than expected, or unexpected bleeding, among other things, can have the surgeon make the decision to proceed the surgery open, even if he/she started out doing lap, so even if you and your surgeon decided on lap RNY, you may wake up and find that the surgeon had to go open while you were knocked out. Sometimes, patients and drs talk over the condition of the particular patient, and decide to go open from the beginning.

I know for me my surgeon thought for sure i was going to wind up being an open being i carried my weight mostly in the middle he had me totally prepared to be a conversion but in the end i was text book perfect lap. SOME surgeons are not trained to do it LAP and only offere their patients open even to this day......

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I have chosen LAP but noing that if something should go rong they will proceed with the open. My surgen let me choose what i wanted and discused with me the chance that they could have to do open. my reason for chooseing LAP was solely on there is less scar( in case of othere abdomin surgery down the road im only 26 i have a lot of life left and things may arize down the road) tissue with it and its less invasevie and much faster recovery if they need to do open though im game. they know better then me its there job and im letting them handle it.

Mine started off as lap, but in recovery I crashed and they found out the surgeon cut an artery and I literally bled to death. They had to open me up to find and fix the bleeder. They gave me 9 units of blood and I was intubated for 24 hours then I finally woke up in ICU. I couldn't believe what had happened because you just expect everything to go okay. I have an 18 inch long scar as a reminder that "risks" are real, but at least I am alive. I think everyone needs to remember that the hundreds of risks the surgeon reads off to you in 5 seconds in pre-op are real and CAN happen. My surgeon has done hundreds of surgeries without a single complication...until me. I really had a lot of regret for the first 6 weeks, but then I started feeling so much better. My incision site still hurts a lot, but the doctor said it can take a long time to heal. All I can say is to be prepared for anything. Feel free to email me anytime with your questions. Although I am only 3 months post-op I had a lot complications even after the surgery so I might have some insight for you. Good luck! Angela |
