Default How long does it take to get nicotine out of your system?

My gastric bypass is scheduled for 8/13/07 and my surgeon requires that you quit smoking 6wks to 2 months before surgery. I have always been able to lay them down when I wanted to and pick them up again when the mood hit. I guess I somewhat of a social smoker. But, since my surgery has been scheduled, I'm nervous and all I want to do is smoke. How long does it take to get nicotine out of your system? I only smoke 2-4/day.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I was told by my dr 72 - 96 hours. I was asked to quit within a weeks time frame prior to surgery supposedly to reduce complications with the anesthesia (sp?)

I smoked 2 packs a day for 15 years. if you only smoke 2/4 per day you shouldnt miss them. quit now. That way you will be past all the withdrawl and urges around the time of your surgery.

The most difficult part of all of this is giving up things, or being restricted. You will already have restrictions where food and drink are concerned. Quitting now will make it one less thing that you "can't" have when you are released from the hospital.

I dont mean to lecture you. I've been there. And i know you cant and wont quit til you are ready. But i was told if i didnt they wouldnt do the surgery. so i did, and i havent even thought about a cigarette since. the smell actually offends me...

Honey I know your feeling. As to your question I have no idea. Somthing tells me they test you for it. Yea they got a test ! LOL I was a smoker. ANd went thru my ordeal in here. Im preop to Surgery set for September. I used the patch.

It acutally impressed me working. I did notice on me however it worked better in certian places than it did others? What i mean is this. Your supposed to use it on your upper body. I have this thing about not placing it on my chest anywhere. It went on my arms or didnt go on. Its transdermal meaning it goes through the skin. My mothers side of the family has such a strong history of breast cancer it scares me to death to place it anywhere above them.

It slowed this smoker down from 1 1/2 packs to 2-3 daily. Dont worry sweetie. You will be able to lay them down before hand. I know already I probally will pick them back up afterwards. I dont want to but if I trade an addiction it will be them because i dont like alchol enough to switch to it ! LOL Im joking but serious about that to.

Right now relax be happy. You will get them down to nothing. I have that faith in you. Now you gotta have it for yourself. Have you found your self not knowing what to do with your hands now? That is my biggest problem.

My Dr. required me to quit 30 days before surgery because of the complications it can cause. I used the patch for 2 days, and then totally quit. I think that me being so scared of the surgery and risks, it wasn't a problem at all. That is what I used for my "motivation" to quit. Then, after surgery, it can cause bleeding ulcers and slow down your healing process. It is very hard dealing with it now. Now, I'm 6 weeks out, dealing with my food addiction AND cigarette addiction!!! Just keep reminding yourself that you want to make sure you do "your part" in making this as successful as you can. Good luck!!!!

Consider it 4-6 weeks.
You have to think not only of the blood level of the nicotine but the effect is has on the surface of your airway. For the chronic inflammation that smoking often causes in your airway, it takes bout 4-6 weeks for that to get better.

thats true. good point doc. also all that extra time can help you mentally quit as well. a lot of time we take for granted that one particular action has a mental side to consider as well.
yes, the fear of the complications is what made me quit. but to be honest i really havent even thought about a cigarette since I quit. everyone is different. you will find a way to make it work in time thats right for you.
