Question A little bit freaked out....

I guess we are all familiar with people telling us horror stories about gastric bypass.

Well, I thought I had gotten used to these stories (thought i heard all of them!) and never really dwelled too much on what people had said (NEGATIVE!). Until this week....Apparently, a woman who had gastric bypass three months ago (performed by my surgeon) passed away last week. 3 different people at work told me about this woman. When I asked what had happened they all had the same answer-electrolytes (sp?). I've been worried about vitamins, water, and protein-no one ever mentioned electrolytes!

Can someone shed some light about electrolytes and if this is something I should truly be worried about?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

um...the only thing i can think of is she got dehydrated BADLY. you lose elctrolytes when you dehydrate, thats why they tell you to drink sports drinks etc when you are sick. im sure doc will be in to explain shortly. i'm definitely going to check back. this sounds interesting.

and dont be freaked out. take care of yourself. You're doing fine.

Electrolytes are salts. The basic ones are K. Na, Cl, and also Ca, P and Mg. That's potassium, sodium, choloride, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in that order. The most important are the first 3, and lack of, excess of, and imbalance of, causes trouble. They are needed for the body to function well, for the muscles to move smoothly, and for nutrients and water to move in and out of cells and bloodstream. The messages our nerves relay are done by the exchange of Na and K in and out of the cell membranes.
Sorry for all tech talk.
Basic info just in case you were interested.

The most likely thing that happened to the woman in the end is, she got irregular heartbeats from the electrolyte imbalance, and her kidney also shut down, both which will happen with severe imbalance. It can be corrected fairly easily, so long as the situation is caught not too late, but, as with all things, once it's gone on to the point of no return, the drs can't correct it quicklely enough for the heart muscles and kidney to recover.

Anyway, some of the things that can disrupt your electrolyte balance.
The most common causes are (for anyone, not just post ops)
1) not getting in enough water, or getting in the wrong kind of fluids.
2)
and 3) on your tail end.
That's why you have to be careful of excess and strictures. Not only does stricture prevent you from getting food in, the resulting also disrupts the water and electrolyte balance.

So long as you are following your dr's instructions, and watchful of your water, protein, vits and supplements, you don't need to worry about it.
If you are not feeling well, always contact your dr, especially early out, and ask what to do, don't balk when he/she asks you to come in, go ASAP, and bug your dr to give you an appt and see you when you feel you need to be seen, but the person on the other end of the phone tells you something else.

(((HUG))))
there are risks going into a major surgery....
i know form me i knew i was a risk at my morbidly obesite
size for strokes and a heart attack at any moment so that
helped me to know this was the right choice even with the
risks this surgery could have caused.
ITS very important to follow all INSTRUCTIONS to the "T" post
op....and keep all post op appointments as well.
I had no complications but i know the risks were there but i had to
take this step for my long term good health.
((HUG)))
i recently lost someone i knew who went for the surgery and its not
easy. BUT for me i had to do this and 143 lbs gone and 2 years post
op its the best thing for me.

Jessica - That story is scary in a way because I have the same surgeon, but her complication doesn't sound like it was a direct result of anything he did (phew!). It sounds like she had trouble getting all her fluids in, or she had trouble keeping things down as Doc said, and maybe didn't call the surgeon early enough for help.

I was just saying to someone yesterday that if 1000 surgeries are perfect and only one has a problem, that's the one everyone will talk about. It's too bad since he's a good surgeon. I will take this as a good reminder to get all my fluids in and to call early if anything seems not quite right.

Hugs,
Chrissy

Don't let this freak you out. No one knows what she was doing or going through. She probably ignored her body that is why it is so important to listen to your body and communicate with your physician.

There are so many things to concider so soon after her surgery.
Losing so much weight so very fast is such a shock to your body and maybe if she was not following the surgoens diet/advice, or maybe had some problems keeping foods down, or maybe was too late in having her surgery and some of the issues she had prior just caught up with her.
So many questions??????
Chrissy has a point though, your going to hear about the bad first. Such sad news in any case.

Default I got the real scoop....

So, I got the real scoop on what happened from a friend who is a dietician at a local hospital. Apparently, the woman in question turned her past food addiction in to a hardcore cocaine addiction after surgery. So, she was doing coke and not eating-reason why her heart stopped.
I obviously feel better/relieved hearing this news, but in some ways I can relate to this woman and feel really bad. You have to have some way to cope or something that makes us feel better, and for most of us that was food before surgery. So, while I don't think I would ever go this route, I sort of understand why she did. My heart goes out to her and her family....
