Arrow Bariatric Surgery: Postoperative Concerns.

Bariatric Surgery: Postoperative Concerns

The above is an American Society for Bariatric Surgery's literature from its Public/Professional Education Committee.
If you have received a brochure of literature from your surgeon, the above may be included in them.
Although some of the terms used here are techincal, it is basically written as information for the patients to be shared with their surgeons and PCP, so the information here should be useful to you, and may answer some of the questions you have right now.

The table of contents are:
1. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Dumping Syndrome
2. Bowel Function Changes after Bariatric Surgery
3. Nutritional Aspects of Bariatric Surgery (General Management Guidelines)
4. Reaching a Plateau.
5. Exercise

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Here Is One Question I Do Have For You Doc

I Have Noticed About A Month Before Surgery Alot Of People Are Put On A Diet To Lose Weight B4 Surgery. I Have Researched And Found Out Why This Is Requested. To Shrink The Liver And Less Weight So There Are No Complications. What Im Wondering Is Why My Doc Didnt Ask Me To Do This B4 My Surgery? I See Him On The 10th So I Will Ask Him But Im Curious Now.

BOOTS, while the actual procedure for surgery is standardized, there are things that are modified and different with each surgeon, which comes from what they feel is most successful from their experience, and feel comfortable with. Pre-op dieting is one of these things. Even if you aren't put on an extened period of pre op diet, you surely will be asked to go on a liquid diet at least a couple of days before surgery, to make sure that your stomach and guts are completely empty at the time of the surgery.

I was required to lose 10% of my starting weight on my own before they would schedule my surgery. I ended up losing 30 on my own (was required to lose 26). They also required that I exercise and call into a nurse my progress over time. The reason? To show your dedication to the changes needed to be successful post operative. I think I've been quite successful, and that the "program" that Kaiser put me through pre-op set me up for success. Kudos to my surgeon and his team. Amy
