| Stupid Questions #3 from me So, I keep reading about this separating liquids and solids after surgery and guess what? I have questions!!! I know ya'll are shocked stupid by that one! First, is keeping them separate a forever thing? Next, how do fluids work? Can you not drink much due to a small pouch? Do you risk dehydration if that is the case? Also, I hate plain water..hate it! But I have grown to love it if I can mix those little Crystal Lite packets into it. I not only like it, but I am drinking more water than I ever have before. Will I be able to use those post op?? Thanks for your patience with me! I actually spoke with a friend today who I have not seen in over year, who had the surgery. She said she had no regrets whatsoever (she's about two and a half years out) other than she wished she had done it sooner. She answered a lot of questions for me about eating and dumping etc and I walked away from the phone conversation with nothing but good vibes.

I just learned this from doc sanae the other day. We are supposed to NOT eat and drink together because fluids wash out of your stomach quicker. This is "forever". If you eat and drink at the same time you can become hungrier faster which would lead to you eating more.
we can drink more fluids because the stoma (the hole between the pouch and the intestine) is always open but very small. fluids flow freely thru it. food takes longer to get thru.
I cannot drink a lot all at once which is why they tell you to sip all day so you dont get dehydrated. if you get to a point where you are thristy you will be in trouble lol! because you cant drink fast enough to satisfy it. you cant "gulp" beverages anymore.
As for crystal light, for me it is a staple. I drink it all day everyday. some people get sick off it post op, but it works fine for me. Hits the spot! I have also acquired an appreciation for plain water as well.

Hi!
My surgeon says to always wait at least thirty minutes after eating before drinking any fluids. You want the food to stay in the pouch for as long as possible to maintain a level of fullness. And yes, you will have to do that forever. But you'll be drinking fluids all day long, so you really won't miss it. And crystal light was on my list of things I could drink post-op.

| So I can still drink all day long other than 30 minutes prior to eating and not until 45 minutes after eating, right? Now, are fluids impacted by this surgery as in do they move through me faster? Am I going to have an even more urgent bladder after surgery?

No my bladder isn't urgent either, but i do find that I have to wake up at night and drink some water. And I drink A LOT of fluids during the day. I find that you just need to always have a drink. Get you a great water bottle, spend a lot of money on it and let it be your new best friend. Mine is orange and HUGE and people make fun of it, but they are getting used to seeing me with it.
Also, go to Sonic and get their great chipped ice. They sell it by the bag full and I have bought a bag weekly since surgery. Eat the ice with the water and you will get those fluids in and not even know it.
As for Crystal Light, I am SO SICK of them, but i am like Kenyar, and have grown a great appreciation for JUST WATER.

| Is there a reason for increased thirst after surgery? Just wondering....

I cant say it's increased, its probably the same level of thit that it always was but magnified now because it takes longer to satisfy it. you just cant drink at the volume that you used to. you really CAN'T gulp. I dont now why, but i remember i used to be able to literally swallow 3/4 of a bottle of snapple in a few gulps when i was thirsty. not anymore. I dont know if my throat got smaller or what lol! I just cant swallow a whole bunch at once.
...though in some cases thirst might have something to do with the malabsorption as well. of course im not a dr. just relaying my experience so far.

KnitterGirl, the Pouch Rules are in the following thread. Pouch Rules.
Also, I hope you'll take a look at the Links to useful articles thread, and go through the threads linked in there, you should be able to find a lot of information in the threads linked in there.
Oops. Forgot about the water.
Actually, the recommended amount of daily water intake for anyone, post ops, pre ops, non ops, is abour 64oz.
As a norm, the 64oz includes water that is included in the food we eat, and we get in on the average 42oz from food, and so are recommended to get in at least 22oz as liquids.
With WLS, the amount of food you can get in, is greatly reduced, so the amount of liquids included in the food is also reduced. That is why you are instructed to get all 64oz as liquids, just to be on the safe side, and the reason you can add your protein shakes and drinks towards liquids for the amount of liquid you use to make the shakes and drinks.

along with the Crystal light packs I suggest the little packs from 4C. There is an orange mix that tastes just like SunnyD and it has Calcium in it. they also make lemonade and Decaf tea. They are made with Slpenda and not Aspartame and I did not see any hidden sugars in them.
