Default Ok, I have some questions about diet drinks...

I don't know about you all, but I was told to stay away from caffeine and carbonated beverages. I am finding that this was easy the first few weeks, but is becoming harder every day. I am tired of decaf tea, coffee and Crystal Light. I just want a Diet Pepsi. Part of me is like why can't I have caffeine? I have given up so much else, ya know? And I am glad, because 39 lbs are gone! But, I am starting to be very cranky and moody about pop. I guess it was an addiction; I tried to cut back before surgery, but now, I just want a taste. I am not hungry, but thirsty.
Please say a prayer for me and tell me to suck it up! Or give me some advice about it. My hubby, who is 2 years out, drinks pop now. Not a lot, but some. My best friend, who is 1 1/2 years out, drinks pop now. I thought about buying one and letting it go flat in the fridge. I know I will never drink pop like I used to, I don't want to, but this seems to be the only problem I am having. It seems awful shallow next to some of the problems on the board, but I thought I would share because someone else might be going through this.
As for the veterans on this board, are you all drinking pop now? I need to know opinions on this evil...

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The thing about it is this. Most drs will tell you not to drink it. I think when I was a few weeks out i shook the bubbles out of a diet caffeine free soda and even that bloated my pouch up so bad i havent had it since. You will find that you want it because you "cant" have it. if you sneak it (lol) just remember to respect the bubbles.

Also think of it this way, the further you can stay away from old habits the better off you will be. Think about it, when you used to drink soda pre-op, what did you eat with it. I bet things you cant or shouldnt be eating post op. I used to drink it with pizza and burgers or the never ending bag of chips. Just think about why it is you want a soda. chances are its deeper than just he soda. For example: Are you stressed out? Are you having anxiety and looking for comfort?

Im praying for strength for you

oh yeah i forgot about that. my dr says caffeine is ok later on. Like i can have a cup of coffee now, BUT anything more than that upsets my stomach. I think they are trying to spare you discomfort as early out as you are. but later on caffeine shouldnt really be an issue provided you dont abuse it.

Well, you can keep a can in the fridge as emergency stuff--something you can go to just in case that craving gets toooooo much. Just the thought that it is there for you may, surprisingly, keep you from drinking it right now.

I was a diet pepsi addict pre op.
I never drank coffee or tea
but i would start my day with a diet pepsi.
I have totally stayed away from the diet pepsi
and any carbonated drinks.

I have found few favorites and im a HUGE fan
of propel now and regular WATER!!!!
I have in the last 2 months taken to iced coffee
(45 years to start drinking coffee, go figure but this surgery
does change tastes)...
I fear the diet sodas because of all the articles that came
out with how the diet sodas trigger more eating and cravings.
I feel it did it to me big time!!!!!!

SO with that i stay strong but im doing the iced coffee few times
a week not daily...but now and then......and NEVER did the POP of any kind and im over 2 years post op now.

GOOD LUCK!

Ok, the coffee-aholic is stepping up to answer the caffeine question. I LOVE coffee! I ordr my coffee from Gevalia. I am seldom seen without a coffee cup in my hand. I HATE decaffenated. But ....

Caffeine makes you pee alot (it's a diruretic) and you are already struggling with getting in enough water so you don't want to make it worse by drinking caffeine. I plan to stay on decaff until my nutritionist gives me the OK.

These articals alone keep me soda free:

Diet Soda and Obesity: Is There a Link?

Research undertaken by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio appears to show a link between consumption of diet soda and weight gain.
The study of more than 600 normal-weight people found, eight years later, that they were 65 percent more likely to be overweight if they drank one diet soda a day than if they drank none. And if they drank two or more diet sodas a day, they were even more likely to become overweight or obese.
To the astonishment of many, it seems that those who drank diet soda had a greater chance of becoming overweight than did those who drank regular, full-calorie soda.

By no means does this state that diet soda causes obesity - but there is a strange pattern at play here. Diet Soda has zero calories so what gives?
One possibility: A person who drinks a diet soda may feel it's OK to make up for those calories with another high-calorie food.
Do those artificial sweeteners make you crave the real thing? I know for me they cause cravings and i think truly is the culprit to body aches. WHEN you come off these products we do undego withdrawals...

diet soda is also EXTREMELY high in sodium. there has to be some kind of link there as well.

Thank you all for you help. I never said that. I have made it through my cravings I think. I did take a tiny drink of the hubby's Diet Pepsi today and was terrified. It still tasted good, so I was like, "don't let me do that again!"
Does anyone know is Snappel Diet Tea has caffeine?
