Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I know that this has been discussed on here before, but I have a pre-op appointment 8/3 to set my date and I haven't totally given up using smokeless tobacco, I have cut way back but just can't quit. Coffee is another evil little habit that is hard to get rid of. How long will it take to get nicotine out of system and is alittle nicotine too much? Decaf coffee is not that bad, if thats permited, which i'm not sure of either.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | so ur getting ur nictotine from an actual cigerette or from a patch???? i imagine its more the C02 thing they look for in a smoker verses the actual nicotin. AND how ur breathing is being its hard to get breathing after major surgeries...... but im no expert im sure doc can help out on this one. I only became a coffee drinker 2 years post op with an ocasional iced coffee so i didnt have to convern pre op of caffine.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | fishy fishy fishy JUST QUIT! lol. I know its easier said than done. I smoked for over 1/2 my life (about 16 years) some years 2 packs a day. so i know it's tough. I am not sure with the chewing tobacco how that works and how long it stays in the system etc. we'll have to wait for doc on this one... |

| Super Moderator | Well, some time back...we had someone who had a "smoke" test done--had the nicotine level in the blood checked, flunked, and was told to come back in 6 weeks... Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, so when you need a good flow of blood for healing your surgery scars, it's not good to have something around that will prevent getting a good blood supply. I'd say, at least 2 weeks, 1 month if possible, off the nicotine. ((((((HUGS)))))

I know this is tough lordy do I know this is tough. Get some patches and some tic tacs. If your dipping snuff try putting some tic tacs mint flavored in the spot you normally put the tobacco. If its not snuff then smack me ! LOL' You can get the store brand patches cheapest place walmart. They are all from the same company. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | this is an alcohol question, but for me cigarettes and alcohol go together. (i know---bad!!!) anyhow, is all alcohol out of the question after bypass? i am not talking every night or even getting hammered on weekends. just maybe a few drinks every now and then when out???

| Super Moderator | Plenty of discussion about alcohol elsewhere, but. Be careful with alcohol because your re-routed gut will make the alcohol hit your bloodstream and liver much much faster than with am untouched stomach. The effect of one glass is said to be five times that for a gastric bypass patient, compared to a "normie". You are likely to get "hammered" by an amount that you never imagined you would be, pre-op. So, if you go out and have a drink, be very sure that there is someone who knows what could happen, and also that there will be a sober person to drive the car, as gastric bypass patients should never touch the stearing wheel with even just one drink under their belt. A a matter of fact, clever bypass patients use the designated driver excuse to not drink in a situation that has the potential of becoming dangerous or ugly. This is the major reason many of the surgeons now will warn you against alcohol. The fact also is, even if you have had NO trouble with alcohol pre-op, you may find yourself developing an issue post op. If you can enjoy alcohol without issue, that is wonderful, but be careful of the stuff until you can be sure you don't have trouble with it.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Yeah MsVickie I dip and have found the nicotine gum is a little better for me than the patch. I guess something in my mouth. But nicotine is still the problem for me pre-op. im just going to quit, I have to.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Ok then you like my hubby. How about the Commit longzes. I myself am totally appaled buy them but my hubby does them. Start with a small pack to see if you can tolerate it. There is always Chantix. Its a Rx most insurances are paying for. I still smoke 3-4 a day. Now See I tell people I quit because to me going from 2 packs a day to 3-4 short puffs and I mean short puffs like 2 each is quitting to me. And doing it this way I have not gained a pound not one. Which is another thing the Dr is gonna look at hard to. I have acutally lost 7 not trying to. Wow on that eh? I have 2 months to kick that 3-4 a day thing. One day at a time for me then to the minutes. You have a couple weeks to get it out of your system. Slap a patch on with the smaller dose on to. You are allowed to so this. Make sure you wear one the day of this to show them you what you have been doing. If your doing the Commit, Gum what ever take it with you so they can see it. I will hope and send good thoughts your way. I know your feelings on this.... Trust me. Good luck darlin. We are gonna support you before during and after..... oh they are selling the Smoke Away stuff now at the drug stores and Walmart. If your like me you will try anything.
