Default Okay, a chicken question this time

and not as in the meat, but as in I am one....a chicken that is!

I was poking around on John Hopkins Bayview site and two of the things they mentioned being hooked up to you after surgery was a catheter and a tube that goes through the nose to the stomach. How bad is it? Does it hurt when they come out? When they are attached? I don't like the unexpected, so be honest!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

i never had the tube from the nose thru the stomach. Ive seen pics of some people who have. I would imagine if you had all that going on while awake it would be awkward. i imagine everytime to swallow it moves....the catheter made me mad and i demanded they take it out and let me get up and "go" myself. and they did! it didnt hurt it was just annoying.

Hmm, I haven't heard patients complain that the NG tubes hurt, just uncomfy-- and a relief when it comes out.
As for the catheter, it can hurt when being inserted, but you'd be out of it at the time, and again very uncomfy when you wake up. It does hurt just a wee bit when being pulled out, but the relief of having it out will make you forget about the pain.
Both the catheter and NG tube are hooked up to a bag to collect the fluids that come out. The bag is usually hung by your bed.

Having had surgery just 16 days ago, I can say try not worry about these little details. It is no where as bad as you may be imagining. at least with me nad most people I have talked to. I did not have a tube in my nose, but did have a catheter but just for 2 days. It does not bother you much when it is in , you're out when they put it in and just uncomfortable for about a 1/2 minute when it is taken out. Relax and stay upbeat. You are not a chicken. You are strong and know what you need to do to have a healthier life. God Bless!. Mattie

Well for my second surgery I woke up with a catheter, JP drain and an NG tube down the nose. None really hurt, I just had a sore throat. The surgeon got me some Cloreseptic throat spray and I did just fine. At my surgery center the nurse told me that since I had two surgeries within a month of each other it may be why my throat was sore. None of these hurt coming out. The NG tube didn't hurt coming out at all, it was just a weird sensation. And before they took it out they unhooked me from the suction that was hooked up to it to make sure I could function without it. They said that I didn't want to have to have it put back in while I was awake, and after watching Big Medicine and Marc I am glad they waited to make sure.

You are not a chicken. I had yet another surgery on Monday (hysterectomy), and I had anxiety and worries about recovery etc. As far as the tubes down the nose and into the stomach, if I had one it must have been removed before I woke up after surgery. The catheter made me feel like I constantly had to urinate, and even on this last surgery I demanded that they remove it as soon as the surgeon would allow it. I felt so much relief urinating on my own, and the removal of it was not painful at all imo. I simply felt relief to have the darn thing out of me. I'll be praying for you, and we all are cheering you on as you make the changes toward becoming your healthiest. Take care! Amy

I didn't have the NG tube when I woke up. And to be honest I think the catherter came out the morning after when they got me up to walk. It didn't hurt but it did sting a little when I had to pee the first time

Oh honey...relax. Please. The catheter they put in when they put you to sleep. The NG tube.. i haven't heard of anyone here having to have it unless they have had to go back. If you have one it goes in while you sleep and shouldnt bother you while they pull it out. Have you ever had a drain pulled? Nothing more than that Im sure. Now for me the catheter on any of my previous surgery's ( not bypass) Have never bothered me. I don't know there there until the nurse makes you get up and swing your legs over the end of the bed and then only because she told me. I have never had it bother me pulling it out either. Thats just me though. By the way. I like it because you ask questions. That is researching it. Your doing what you need to do now. Keep it going !

i did forget to mention the drain. its this bulb thing connected to a tube thats left in you when you leave the hospital. not everyone gets it for some reason, but most ive come across on here have. its drains the fluids from your gut (for lack of a better word) i gagged a few times because you have to empty this thing a couple times a day GROSS. not trying to scare you. it didnt hurt or anything like that it was just nasty lol. (sorry)
