I probably should have just put this on the thread I posted earlier when I asked about malnutrition... however, Last week a nurse pratictioner mentioned to me she would be concerned about the long term effects of RNY because of the relationship to malnutrition and cancer. the malnutrition question has been answered for me, thank you Doc! But... if you manage your health fairly well even though from time to time you might not do so great... are your chances greater for cancer? This is one reason I wanted to hear from folks who were out from surgery for a while. thanks again, Fre

I don't think there's enough data out there anywhere to determine if WLS patients have a higher rate of cancer. However, there's plenty of data that says that with a lot of cancers, obesity is an added risk factor. So, however the results come out, which do you prefer, the already known dangers to your life, or the still unknown--and so as yet unproved-- dangers? As for malnutrition and cancer, if you become deficient of certain nutrients (and so, this actually can happen to anyone, not just gastric bypass post ops), there's a possibility that it will lead to the dysfunction of your immune system which in turn will lead to an easier susceptibility to various illnesses, but so long as you keep up with your supplements, and have what you need within the necessary range. so far, I don't think there's any data that indicates increased cancer ratios. As a matter of fact, at a WLS workshop I attended, one of the surgeons who talked about statistics relating to gastric bypass mentioned that so far as he knows, the number of certain kinds of cancer seems to be lower with bypass patients than with the normal popluation, but no statistical analysis had been done yet, so he couldn't say for sure.

That gives me a better feeling to know that it IS within MY power and not just a case of me being suceptible to cancer just because of my changed body (the one I hope to have). I really do appreciate the answers and support here. best, Fre
