| WLS Mentor | all those post op s out there aren't gonna like me for this one but is it possible (for a pre op) to take in too much protien. How does it affect us before such surgery, i'm asking because i've started using protien shakes for breakfast and a bar for a snack in the afternoon cause i'm trying to lose weight. is it helpful, can i get too much ?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | i see now harm... never to early to start good eating habits. THERE are high protein diets out there: atkins and southbeach that keep proteins high carbs lo! ITS a far more filling food them empty calorie loaded carb loaded foods that trigger eating !IF done correctly birdy you can loose alot from eating that way! ALL the best xoxo

| Super Moderator | No, there's no problem in getting your protein in. Nothing really to worry about too much protein either, unless your renal (kidney) function is low (for instance, if you have nephropathy--degradation of kidney function-- from diabetes) in which case your protein intake has to be limited. You do need some carbs, though (your brain cells run only on glucose, except in a very rare situation) so just make sure you don't starve your brain. The ADA recommends a minimum amount of 130g carbs (but keep this good carbs, not bad ones). For proteins, the daily requirement is from 30-50 grams, so the recommended daily intake, to be safe, is 60-75 grams. BUT when you are going through rapid weight loss-- as with WLS, protein can be delpleted along with fat, so your protein intake has to be higher, 100 grams (approx 3.5 oz) or more. Also, as with post ops, when you are eating real food, eat the protein first, this keeps you feeling full longer, and even if you eat good carbs after the protein, it helps in keeping your carb craving under control. Great going, starting early on making good eating a habit!!

| Super Moderator | Yes, by carbs I mean potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, wheat, grains and grain products...preferebly unrefined, but if processed, as little as possible. Best to avoid fried ones, stick to baked, boiled, brolied, that kind of stuff, not cooked with oil/butter.

| WLS Mentor | ok thanks Doc.I've pretty much cut out potatoes, bread, hardly ever eat pasta and when i do it's in the form of whole wheat lasagna noodles or whole wheat spaghetti noodles. i eat rice like say once in every 6 or 7 months, (not a big rice fan), when i do eat bread it's 12 grain or rye and when i do crave potatoes or find i am extra hungry i 'll have a yam (well half a yam. So i hope i'm ok. Thanks for the advice

Height: | Another good thing to do is to substitute brown rice for white rice. I did South Beach before I decided to have the surgery, and it was easier to follow than a lot of other diets because it recognized the need for good carbs. It sounds like you have a really good handle on it. I love Triscuits too. I would put a little low fat whipped cream cheese on them and if I was really lucky a sliced strawberry. Janae |

Height: | One thing that I have discovered post op that I like protein wise is the Oven Roasted Turkey Spam. It is a softer easier meat to eat in the puree stage, you can fry it and compliment it easily, and it has low amounts of fat in it so you don't have to sweat about that. I have tried it pan fried with a thin strip of mozzarella melted on it and either mustard or marinara sauce to mix things up. I also enjoyed the fact that it was easy to grab a slice of it and nibble it as I was driving to get the car's oil changed today. Hope this helps you out. Janae |
