Default Coffee and sf/non carbonated drinks...a no-no?

Hi, all. I start the 6 month coursework for bariatric surgery on Monday. YAY!

There is a BS "survivor" who I work with that I overheard complaining to a coworker about her husband giving the "lowdown" to her parents about how she is drinking coffee or crystal light, and how she shouldn't be. She is a little over a year post op.

What is the physical problem with 10 oz of coffee in the AM and some flat sugar free drink during the day?

Thanks!

Judijo.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

well. all dr's instructions seem to be different. but i can have coffee and crystal light post op. in the beginning i wasnt allowed cafeine but i have since been cleared. apparently it upsets the pouch...which i can attest to. i was never told i couldnt drink crystal light, in fact my nutritionist pushed it for months. maybe there was a special circumstance?

Most surgeons say no to caffeine drinks, but so long as the coffee/tea is decaf, they usually say okay. As for crystal light, I've never heard of it as a no-no.

I was told by my surgeon that caffeine is a diaretic and that it can cause dehydration. So if you want tea or coffee like DocSanae said, it has to be decaf.
But, I have been drinking crystal lite since I started on phase 1 of liquids.

Yes I was told by surgeons office to drink Crystal Light. they suggest it actually if you didnt like the water. And coffee is ok too they said. they would prefer the
decaf they said but that one cup of regular wont hurt. And I do drink a cup of
regular every monring and its fine.
But like some of the others have said, all surgeons are different. We have seen
that on here all the time. Each one varies so much.

YEAH never really heard someone not being able to have the crystal light!
BUT the caffine and sodas are usually banned liquids for post ops.

AS well as drinking with a meal!
We have to wait 30 mintues (varies from surgeon to surgeon slightly)
after a meal
to start consumeing our fluids.

I just had my surgery Monday, and was told clear liquid diet until I get in for my post op doctor's appointment. Docotr told me to consume 64 oz. of water and that certain items could be counted as water - sugar free jello, crystal light, sugar free apple juice, sugar free ice pops, and decafe coffee... so I figure that since the decafe coffee can be counted as a water then this will help.
I was an avid reg. coffee person every morning, a couple of cups, but 5 days after surgery, I am not even missing it...

I Was Told Coffee Is Fine As Long As Its Decaf!!!! And Of Couse I Can Drink Crystal Lite As Well. Infact Every Since I Had The Surgery I Hate The Taste Of Plain Water. So Without Crystal Lite I Wouldnt Be Able To Survive. Lol
