Question One more! A question about protein

Doc this is another one Im sure you can help me with along with the rest.

Is it true that our body only absorbs 2-4 grams of protein per meal? No matter how many we place in our bodys. Is that why we need so many? This was also addressed on the show I watched today. If you dont know what extreme makeover is.....the one I watched is they selected 3 people to give them a chance to get healthier before any plastics were performed. They had to lose weight or they didnt get the plastics. Unlike the Swan were they had the surgery then lost the wieght. This man was expert on this. I wonder if that pertains to WLS patients as well?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I haven't run across any data that says exactly how much protein is absorbed per meal. At least, it isn't in the standard medical textbooks.
However, according to physiology text books, the minimum requried amount of protein daily in regards to our metabolism, is 35-50 grams, so the recommended daily intake is 60-75 grams to be on the safe side. Calculated from that, the absorption rate is somewhere around 55-66% of what you eat, or 12-16g per meal.
This may decrease for a while post bypass, but it is said that a lot of your absorption ability will come back after a while, and those most affected are the nutrients that are absorbed in very specific areas for specific reasons, while those that are absorbed through most of the digestive system will be least affected, and so will be absorbed almost the same as pre op, once the body adjusts completely to the changes, which will take a year or so.

Ok thank you. I had to go look this up to. It seems the body dont use the extra protein it dont use. I didnt understand if it was stored or not.

Basically, protein is not *stored* in our bodies the way glucose and fat are. That's why it's most important to get protein in daily, compared to other the other two major nuturients.

Doc - may I ask a question about the amount of protein per meal?

I have heard that only 30g or so of protein is absorbed at one sitting. Is that accurate?

The reason I ask is that I've seen some protein shots/powders with 40-50g of protein in them.

20-30 per meal is probably best. The higher protein products, divide in two servings.

Doc 20-30 Protein Per Meal??? How Do Us Post Ops Do That? I Mean Dont Get Me Wrong I Get Usually About 70 Or A Little More Protein For My Whole Day But 20-30 In One Sitting. I Dont See How That Is Possible On The Amount We Eat. I Usually Eat A Bunch A Small Meals And 2-3 Shots Of Protein For My Day So I Can Add Up To My Total Protein Intake For The Day.

Eventually you will be able to. 3-4 oz meat will have around 20g protein in it. In the meanwhile, get in as much as you can with your regular meals, and supplement with pritein shakes and drinks.

Question Very interesting about....

Protein Shots???
I've never even heard of them.....that is soooo intersting.
I had such a difficult time getting all my protien in - especially when I was "OVER" protein shakes.

Now, I have found one of the best shakes that are low glycemic...and I'm doing great....

Tell me more about those shots....how did you hear about them?? Your doctor??

Question protein supplements/dr. appt.

went to the docs today, it's been amout 3 1/2 months since surgery and lost total of 53 lbs. Doc also mention i should not be taking protein
supplements, he feels i should be doing it on my own. Doc is totally
against supplements even for vegetarians. I explained i have a hard time getting enough protein and find meat hard to digest. any advice ?
