Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Good morning all! Question...I am not convinced that my PCP is really all that supportive about my trying to get RNY, which brings me to a second item of concern. I see a nurse practitioner at my doc's office more often than not and she is the one I have discussed this with. Should I actually start seeing one of the docs as opposed to the practitioner? I know I can't expect her to be as revved up about this as I am, but she seemed almost blase about it. I don't want to wind up with a problem once my six month structured diet is completed, so I want to know who I should be seeing now. Thoughts? |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I went through this with a Dr's office too, some Dr's just don't approve of the surgery, which will include their Nurse practitioners. I changed Dr's twice, until i found one that supported the surgery. After research and talking to people, i knew i had to do what was going to be best for me, i just needed to find a Dr. who agreed. But i would talk to your primary first... if your primary doesn't sound like he/she is going to help you go forward, i would look elsewhere. that is just my opinion. I worked hard to get my referral and surgery.

| Super Moderator | Quite honestly, I think you would be better off with a PCP who is cooperative. Even if he/she isn't familiar with WLS patients, be willing to learn. Your PCP is the person you will have to turn to if you need help when your surgeon is for some reason unavailbe. Looking for a PCP with whom you feel comfortable with, is a good idea.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I agree with Doc. My PCP had never eferred ANYONE out for surgery. I was her 1st but she was supportive from day 1. I say find a doc you are comfy with and if they arent familiar with the proces, be their "learner" patient...I know not a real word but I think you get what I am trying to say |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I Agree With Everyone Else. Infact When I Discussed For The First Time With My Pcp I Was A Little Shocked He Understood And Told Me That Is The Best Option For And To Not Think About It That I Should Do It. I Figured He Was Old Fashioned A Bit And Wouldnt Go For It. But The Reason He Was So Supportive And Understood A Fat Persons World Was Because He Told Me Somthing I Never Knew. He Used To Be Very Obese At One Time. Boy Was I Shocked!!!! He Didnt Have The Surgery He Ended Up Losing It On His Own But He Totally Understood How I Felt And Was Very Very Supportive And Helped Me In Every Way Possible For To Get This Surgery!!! That Is The Type Of Doc You Need |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | i agree with everyone else. find a dr who will cooperate and be willing to seek out ways to support your aftercare. it would be a terrible thing if you were appoved and did NOT have the support of your dr afterwards for follow ups and any scripts you may need. with that said, SWITCH! lol. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | My PCP was never available, like yours and I did see the PA for every one of my visits. My PA even wrote a letter to my insurance company indicating why she felt I was a candidate for the surgery. But...like everyone has said, make sure you are comfortable with your physician's office. I personally like my PA better than my PCP, but because my PA works under the PCP umbrella, she was allowed to write to my insurance without question. Do your homework with your insurance company, if you like your PA or NP, then check to see if your insurance would accept documentation from them, most insurance companies supply an 800 number to call, it's a free call, it won't hurt to get facts now than to worry about them later. Good luck and keep us informed. P.S. I have worked in the health insurance field for 20 years, and would be happy to give you any pointers you may need to get through this.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I agree - get a PCP you can be comfortable with - I saw the PA at first here in AZ who was more than agreeable to write the letter - she left before I got it ready but the Dr who replaced her agreed to write it anyway. The Dr we use in the summer in Colorado was more than eager for me to have the surgery so I really lucked out both ways. Judy
